Could a teacher get fired for calling a student a stupid b!tch?

Could a teacher get fired for calling a student a stupid b!tch?
I go to a Catholic high school in Central Florida. Today in detention the teacher supervising us called a student a stupid b!tch. The student's name was pronounced wrong when the teacher was calling roll and he made a comment something like "the name's blah blah blah, dude" and the teacher got mad and said "Don't call me a dude, what's your problem, etc. etc, stupid b!tch". I learned after the detention that the teacher got mad because he was Brazilian and apparently dude is an offensive term in Brazil. I don't think that excuse would fly though because we're in America, not Brazil. Any insight would be appreciated.

that's funny Ann frank goes to a Catholic school
3 :
that teacher could be fired, go to your parents and the head of the school
4 :
That teacher should be fired, but if you are in a private school it may or may not happen- depending on how desperately teachers are needed.
5 :
Maybe. However in Brazil, being called a stupid b!tch is actually a compliment there. It gets lost in the translation. Call him a stupid b!tch to let him know that you're in the know!
6 :
He probably will end up fired. Teachers have been fired for much less. Never mind calling a student a curseword. He's suppose to keep his cool even when the students are acting like common sense was never invented. After all he's the adult.
7 :
isn't your avatar of Anne Frank? (no, a teacher can't do that anywhere...even if it IS true).
8 :
a teacher could get fired yes.. especially because its a catholic school.. will that teacher get fired it all depends on whether or not the school really needs that teacher.. thats hilarious
9 :
If he were in Brazil I would understand but as you said he is not. This should definelty not be accepted. If you went to his country and said something offensive without knowing, I'm sure they wouldn't tolerate it. As an educator in the United States of America he should know what's right from wrong in this country.

How do you call the last round of beers in a pub or a bar?

How do you call the last round of beers in a pub or a bar?
I'm a teacher of english in Brazil and students asked me how to say "saideira" in english. Saideira is the popular name of the last round of beers just before you and your friends leave the bar. (it's not the the last round of the bar, just for you and your friends)

last round please "That will be our last call" if its close to closing time the bartender usually says "Last Call"
3 :
Make this the last round guys/dudes. Kill the night with this one. Last drink guys.
4 :
I'm not sure I've ever heard of a single word or phrase that would designate the last round for a person or group. I've always used "One more and cash me out" prior to receiving my last drink. Mostly, my friends and I have to be given last call because we refuse to stop drinking.
5 :
Pretty sure it's < last call >
6 :
I don't think we have a specific term for the last round among a group drinking together. Night cap is probably the closest youre gonna get, and thats a stretch.

Is it hard to be accepted into an exchange student program?

Is it hard to be accepted into an exchange student program?
Two years ago, my family hosted an exchange student from Brazil. Since then I've wanted to be involved in an exchange program. I'm only a Freshman in high school, but I'd like to go my junior year. I am currently involved in my school's band, chorus, a cappella, drama club, school musical, and tennis, so I think I have extra-cirricular activities down. I take Spanish two, so I'd like to know what are some good Spanish speaking countries to travel to. Also, what exchange program should I use? I've heard a lot about Rotary. Is it hard to be accepted? How early should I apply? It is harder to get into a six-month program or a full year program? Should I consider going to a country that doesn't speak Spanish? Thanks for the help. P.S. I'm from the United States, if that helps.

I think it all depends on what type of program you are applying for. Some are more academically-oriented than others, so some have stricter GPA requirements and the like. Spanish-speaking countries are good, however, because there are many programs available in that area. This means there are plenty of programs that you can apply to, and you are likely to be accepted by at least one. ;) I studied abroad in my junior year of college, and I would recommend that you apply absolutely as early as possible. Give yourself plenty of time. Even if you keep in touch with your study abroad advisor and all your liaisons (and you should), there are usually long delays between when you apply and when you hear back. Also, there are always unexpected delays and things that it is impossible to plan for. You cannot apply too early. As I said, I think a Spanish-speaking country is a good choice. Many people I know have had very good luck with Latin American programs. They seem to be very immersed in the culture, and they reported having good experiences. However, I went to Japan for my study abroad. It all depends on what you are interested in. On the other hand, your experience will be more meaningful if are familiar with the local language. Good luck~ hope that helps~

Spain is a wonderful choice and the program www.beautifulspain.com, one of the best if not the best of the programs offered abroad world wide. Location is a safe and most amazingly beautiful beach resort in Northern Spain. You can also check YFU although their programs are a bit pricey. Host families are extremely well screened and very loving. This program gets returnees year after year, so great it is. Cost is really reasonable considering everything included (as long as you sign up with this program through their web site as there are organizations that sell the same program for much more so high quality it is). Some of the activities and excursions it offers besides Spanish, cooking and dancing classes are: Guggenheim Museum, paella dinner, bullfight, fireworks on the beach, city tour, medieval towns, fishing villages, many beach days, Aquarium, tall ship vessel excursion, Roman village hiking trip, shopping, and much more. It offers you the possibility of enrolling with a friend with whom to share same host family home, or for you to stay alone at host family. Many host families count on children of similar age to participating students.

Welcome party (for exchange student) food ideas?

Welcome party (for exchange student) food ideas?
Hi. We'll be hosting a student from Brazil in the US for a year. She'll be arriving in a few weeks to spend the summer here. I know she enjoys parties and barbecues. I'd like to invite our friends, some neighbors, and a few teens that I know, about 30 people in all. Should I mix some brazilian recipes in with american food? Any good ideas or recipes for me? I don't just want to order a bunch of pizzas or something. I'm a decent cook, but have never thrown a party this large. It would be in the evening, so the food would need to be heavy enough for people to make a dinner. Thanks so much!!

2 :
Forget the Brazillian food. Welcome her to the USA. Pizza, burgers, hot dogs, BBQ, wings, appetizers, etc. Show her a typical American backyard party.
3 :
Since he is from brazil you should do a luau time thing with citrus fruits and some sea food and then buy like leis and stuff
4 :
Have an American barbecue with cooked meats and picnic salads on the side. She is from Brazil and eats that food all the time. Once you have the party, ask if there is a favorite dish she can teach you to prepare. Share recipes and cooking ideas with her and let her share with you. Make a memory for a lifetime.
5 :
I think if you made dishes that are common here, it might be more fun for the exchange student. Make some sort of pasta dish, grill some chicken or kabobs of veggies & meat, a dip. Maybe ask the exchange student if they have a favorite dish from their country that they could tell you how to prepare or help you make it if you wanted to incorporate something. Excellent & Easy dessert: Combine 1 package of cream 1 container of vanilla yogurt Serve with various fruits to dip; strawberries, grapes, bananana, pineapple.
6 :
Mac and cheese! And apple pie!
7 :
Try using a lot of diffent dishes around the world to show the ethnic diversity to the U.S. to him! (^_^) Here's a rock'n recipe that I love to make for events, evrybody love's it becuse it's a nice chage from normal ribs. Sweet And Sour Spare Ribs 1 1/2lbs pork spare ribs 1/2 tsp. salt 2 Tbs. sugar 1 Tbs light soy sauce 2 Tbs wine vinegar 1 1/2 Tbs. tomato puree 2 Tbs. Orange Juice 1 small onion 1 in. cube fresh ginger 1 clove garlic 3 Tbp. vegtable oil [Note: Sometimes if I have it on hand I like to mix it up with a little bit of Lime Aid, a tablespoon or so to mix in with the OJ...I usally use "Simply Limeaid"] 1) Rinse the spare ribs and pat them dry with a paper towel. Cut off as much fat as you can. Sprinkle with salt. [Note: I like to half the spareribs to the flavor pentrates the meat more wile cooking if you want to do that] 2) Pour the soy sauce, sugar, vinegar, tomato puree and orange juice into a deep casserole dish and stir them well. 3) put ribs in sauce and cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate it for one hour 4)Peel onion and chop finely. Peel ginger and grate it. peel garlic and crush with fork or press. 5) Heat oil in a large pan and fry onion, ginger, and garlic for a few min then remove from pan. 6) Then fry the ribs for 5 min. turning them over halfway through. 7) turn the heat down a little. add onion, garlic, and ginger. Pour the sauce form the casserole dish over the top. 8) Cook for about 10 min until ribs are cooked, stiring them all the time so they do not burn.
8 :
Personally I like the sound of a blend of both. That way the Americans can get an example of the culture food that she is used to and she can get a sample of American food. Set up two tables, decorate one with the Brazilian flag and other things from her culture, get some ideas from her or search the Internet for ideas Then decorate an American table with the American flag and your state flag. Use and eagle center piece. You can use a map of each country somehow in the decorations as well. Use your party to educate your guests on her culture and vise versa.

Has anyone ever had their foreign exchange student come live with them the year after their program ended?
My foregn exchange student from Brazil and his family would like for him to get a new visa and come back on his own to live with us to finish high school and start college. I don't know how to go about doing this or even where to start. I live in Texas and I don't know how I would get him signed up for school and make it so he can get a job and all that stuff. Please let me know if you have dealt with this before. Thanks! Thanks for the feedback. I know he wll need a visa, but I am more interested in how about going to get him signed back up for scool and all that stuff.

Students are able to come back and finish school the second year. However, they need to check the current program requirements. I thought that FLEX students were not allowed to return for 2 years. If they can return, they would have to get an F-1 visa and the school they would attend would have to be an approved school. The immigration services has a list of approved schools. The school can apply but there is a cost and paperwork involved. You would have to talk to the school about that.

NZ is great, because you got me, Whoaahahahah,,,,,,,,,,,,, just joking. Over here is bit of a slow pace country. Quite relaxing if you want to get away from the hussle and bustle of everyday life. From a medical student, do I:Break up? Get Married? Keep dating?

From a medical student, do I:Break up? Get Married? Keep dating?
I've been dating a girl for nearly 3.5 years now. I know that's about the time to start thinking about popping the question but honestly, Im starting to question our compatibility. We are opposites in a lot of instances and I used to think that was refreshing but now I question if I could put up with that over a life time. But Im in a high stress environment so I dont want to make any rash decisions so I'm seeking the advice of others on this one. Im about to start my 3rd year in medical school and have a 3 yr residency after that, so I dont see myself leaving my high stress life anytime soon. Should I consider breaking up with her so she can enjoy her life while Im living out mine in the school library? Timeline: Spring 06 - Met at university, she was exchange student from brazil -kept dating long distance (yes, 5000 miles) with visits every few months to see each other August 08 - She moved to the city to be closer to me (still 1 hour away - mainly see each other one weekends) August 09 (next month) - we're planning on living together to see if seeing each other on a daily basis will decrease the stress caused by me having to study on weekends (which is the only time we get to see each other)

is she interested in u that seriously that she can marry u taking all that comes with u......stresssss. And I think u should go for a live in relation ship to know each other much better...that will give u the proper secnario as u both can live with each forever or not....
2 :
Yes break it off and concentrate on your medical education because stress in a relationship is not what you need right now. Best of luck to you.
3 :
I think you should have a better reason for breaking it off with her other than you're about to go through some stressful education...she might not be appreciative of that at all, and you might regret it. If the relationship is going bad and you don't enjoy it then that is a good reason for breaking it off, but if it's good for the most part with just a few disagreements then I think you'd both be more unhappy if you ended it. Bear in mind in any real long-term relationship there will be certain incompatabilities no matter what; you just need to learn to work with them. And you do not have to start thinking about marriage only 3.5 years in. It's not really all that long. Not sure how old you are, but if you're still studying you're probably quite young, so another good reason not to think about it. There's nothing wrong with waiting longer to decide these things. She should appreciate it can take time to think about this...if not, then she's probably not right for you. Think about it, marriage is 60 years with somebody, can you really know about that after 3.5 years? Some people rush into it early but that doesn't mean you have to. It's a personal choice, take as long to consider it as you want (and talk about it with her). I say keep dating her to see where things go, let it run its course...it might well get easier when you move in...also talk about it with her, ask if she can handle you under stress or if she wants to get out now...maybe she has the same uncertainties as you.
4 :
Keep dating her for awhile and see where things head. If you're in a high-stress environment, there's no sense in compounding it with thoughts of marriage. She should understand this. What she chooses to do is beyond what I can predict; but if you truly feel a connection to her and she has no objections to your schedule, don't throw away a good thing. If you think there's a chance she'll regret her decision, tell her exactly what the situation will be. If she wants to stay, let her. If she wants to leave, let her. But herein lie the turmoils of love. What if you become closer to her and she chooses to leave? What if you leave her and your plans go asunder, leaving your high-stress life suddenly calm? These are questions only time can tell. Good luck to you.

3 :
get her something that has to do with american/canadian christmas like ummm snow?
4 :
What's your question? Get her a present. If she is coming before Christmas, do some last minutes shopping once you get to know her.
5 :
Depending on where you live - you could get her something typical of your area - something that symbolises your city or town - if its famous for certain things give her something based on that Say for instance your town is famous for nice pottery - you could give something pottery that she might find either useful or will be able to keep as a nice keepsake of her time in your family Other than that - do you have a typical thing that is given to someone in your family at a similar age to what she is - perhaps its a nice piece of jewellery that is given to mark the end of senior school or something like that You could always give her a voucher for clothing to help her fit in with the rest of the family and what you wear - then she could choose something typical of what other family members wear so that she feels like part of the family while living with you - if you give a voucher - choose a store which has nice clothes for teens - perhaps a shop that you would think cool to shop at Have a great time with your student - I have hosted too and its a great cultural experience
6 :
Maybe you should try to get her a basket of things that are local to the area you live in. For instance, I live in Canada, where maple syrup is a big deal. Also, you could make up a gift bag of stuff that you and your friends think are cool, like the type of fashion jewellery you guys wear, hair products you use, treats you like. Make up a cd of music that is popular in your group of friends. It would make a nice welcome for her.
7 :
I would strongly suggest something very american and traditional to show her how christmas is in america! Buy a simple bracelet, a perfume set, or some jewelry or something like that. If you plan on spending around $100 on it, then consider these great gifts: $50 1. A travel kit 2. Some Ugg boots 3. A scarf set 4. A charm bracelet 5. A leather journal 6. Perfume 7. A cute wallet 8. Some sweater booties like those from Victoria's secret for only $35 $60-$100 1. Ugg boots 2. A cashmere sweater from AE $90 (I saw this in Teen Vogue December/January issue, see ae.com for details 3. D&G Journal $70 4. A clip on iPod shuffle $50 and iTunes gift card 5. A cute Hello Kitty wallet $69, Tokidoki for Hello Kitty metroparkusa.com All of these gifts have that american feel

Help? Learning Portuguese in Brazil?

Help? Learning Portuguese in Brazil?
Hi, I am a Rotary exchange student in Brazil right now for the year. I have been here for 5 months and still feel my Portuguese sucks, even this Portuguese is supposed to be on of the easier languages! I can understand a lot when people speak to me, but for example during school and when when the teacher talks, brazilians talk to eachother, etc I can barely understand! They talk so fast and it's so hard at times, most kids say they are fluent by the end of their stay(well atleast conversationally) but i leave in 5 months! Tell me this will get better? I am starting to worry, i try and talk a lot, i study, etc but i dont know what im doing wrong. can anyone advise me?

Well I dont know who told you Portuguese is an easy language, but it sure is not. What you are going through is normal. When I went to the US, took me about 8 months to start speaking...I could understand but to speak was another story. And I found english a pretty easy language to learn. Just make sure you are surrounded by portuguese, and try to speak it with friends. It comes in time. And depending on the time you are here, i really dont think people can come out of here fluent so fast. Surely not in 5 months!

Tourist Visa for an American to go to Brazil?

Tourist Visa for an American to go to Brazil?
basically this december I plan on enrolling into a language school to help me learn portuguese in brazil. But I only plan to stay there for about 30 days and I know I need a visa. I plan to get a tourist visa, but on the application it says that I need a contact in brazil (address, name and phone number) If I give them a name of a school will the consolate be suspecious and deny me a visa. I mean they must know that lots of people go to brazil for a short time and study on a tourist visa. Also my mother is a flight attendant and we can fly for free there, but we never used a planed flight itenarary nor do we get plane tickets weeks in advance. So should I just book a flight to show to the consolate (so they know my arrival and departure date) and cancel or change it later after i get a visa. How difficult is it getting a visa (either tourist or student) I live in Arizona and I'll have to use an agency to get a visa or go to the consolate in LA (wayyy to far and expensive)

Here's what you'll need for a student visa: http://www.brazilsf.org/visa_student_eng.htm It'll cost about $150, and in my opinion would be worth it so you wouldn't have to worry about breaking rules and possibly being denied a visa.
2 :
If you are an American, the same they apply to Brazilians, will apply to Americans. Explain all, turist visa is just 100 box, student is more.
3 :
You need a student visa.
4 :
why dont you just contact the Brazilian Consulate ? Search on yahoo if there is one in Arizona.. if there isn't .. Theres is Deff one somewhere in south Cali.. they'll answer all of your questions.. boa sorte
5 :
I believe that if you are going as a tourist you don't need to know anyone there... you will stay in a hotel... once you go for the visa interview make sure you have a hotel name, address and phone number.... Best of Luck
6 :
You don't need a student visa to study in Brasil. If you're planning to stay less than 3 months and won't work a tourist visa works for you.

How can I convince my Mom to let me move to Brazil...?

How can I convince my Mom to let me move to Brazil...?
I already posted this but it was in the middle of the night so no one really answered...I am 13 years old and live in San Francisco. I am Brazilian and live with my mom. I had the idea to try living and being a student in Brazil. I speak almost fluent Portuguese. If I went to live in Brazil I would live with my uncle who has a 16 year old daughter and wife in the state of Rondonia. I have been to Brazil many times and while some parts of Brazil suffer poverty, Brazil is well developed and has many well educated people. The problem is I haven't brought it up with my Mom, as she gets easily offended by things like these. She will say I don't love her and won't miss her but that is not true. How can I convince my Mom? I only wanna stay there for a year

Just sit her down and tell her Hey Mom? I've recently been thinking about staying in Brazil for a little. I mean I like it here with you but I just really want to stay in Brazil. I'm better at Porteguese that English and I'm from there and I just really love being over there. I could stay with Uncle Blank and his family. I just really want to go. I'll miss you a lot and I'll miss it here but how about I stay there for just one school year and see how I liek it?
2 :
well let her time.. u are still her baby boy.... u are still 13 ... let her raise you like she planned to - when u are over puperty - or like 18 , 19 you will have it a lot easier to convince her ! :)
3 :
your 13, your too young to do that.
4 :
Sorry, I don't think there's any way she will let you. I know it doesn't feel fair but a parent's desire to protect her children is too strong to let them just move away to another country. She wants the best for you and probably just couldn't stand not knowing at all times that you were safe. (Even if you just wanted to move down the street she would feel this same way!)
5 :
It costs the Average American $200,000 to raise one child from the age of 0 to 18, yes zero, before your birth, clothes, le mans classes etc etc... Anyways you are 13 now. SO, if you moved there right now, it would cost your uncle about $67,000 to raise you until you are 18. Thats not including college, either. Most kids are NOT independent at age 18 and if you go to college for the next 4 years lets add $33,000 to that to make a nice even number of about ohh $100,000 total for your existance for the next 9 years. You're not thinking properly... It's also your moms job to raise you and teach you about life until you're mature enough, adjusted enough to step into the real world. Look back at some of your old pictures when you were 9 10 11 and you will say man what was a i thiking i look like a fool, but im smarter now i dress way better and dont have such a goofy haircut... Well, im 25 and I look at pics when i was your age, when i thought i knew everything about anything and said, man look at that dork, what was i thinking.... YOu will never convince your mom to let you go to brazil, unless she hates you and wants to pawn you off on someone else.

Why would it be a big issue? Just have reasons you want to go (for a new experience, etc) and don't just come out like you would rather be there than here with your mom. Sounds like you have an excellent plan, and staying with your uncle is SO much better than staying with some stranger in a exchange student program.
7 :
Maybe you could wait until you are in high school or in college and study abroad for a year.

Brazil for a year, can someone tell me everything about it!?

Brazil for a year, can someone tell me everything about it!?
Okay, so my name is Alyssa. I'm a sophomore in high school. I love adventure and am looking for change, so I signed up to be a foreign exchange student in Brazil for a year. Can someone please give me a run down of the country? I know its sort of generalizing, but just basics will do. My main concerns are: How expensive is clothing Are people friendly usually Will I be discriminated because I'm from Usa? If I don't wear a thong bikini will I be considered strange?(lol) What are the men like? What is the food like? What should I stay away from/ make sure to visit? answers to any of these questions will be greatly appreciated!

I've only been to Natal, a small town on the very eastern shore. It has a great beach, and a wonderful sand dude buggy ride.
2 :
For me answer you accurately is necessary to know in which city you will be accommodated. The cities have different habits due to immigration of different people for each one of the areas. In the South German , in the northeast Dutch , in the southeast French and Italian . Like this being each place has different habits. Don't worry in being harassed in Brazil by being north American, here we didn't discriminate anybody, the maximum that will happen is that you will be called of gringa.
3 :
- well, i'm brazilian, and.. cloths... if there are ''de marcas'' (sorry but i don't know how to say that.. let me see... expensive.. whatever) it will be so expensive as in another country, but.. if there are simple.. it will be very chip, depends what u like.. - no, u won't be discriminated cause u are american, cause wu love stranger, and we are very friendly :) - no, many people use thong bikini, not the most, but some one else use :) - the food is amazing! but, if u don't like, u can have mc'D, subway, bob's, and other fast food - stay away from Favelas, it are veery veeeeeery dangerous! i hope that i can help u :D for any question, please, ask me via email ::D:D xoxo
4 :
Hi! Alyssa. I'm brazilian and I can help you about these questions. I'm from Rio, living in my hometown, so I know everything you want about Brazil and brazilians. First read this answer. But, after reading this, if you want to know more, I have another complete answer about Brazil and brazilians below. 1 - CLOTHING: Depends on the brands. If a imported (imported products are taxed for more 60% over original price) like Gucci, Versaci, Valentino, or some Von Dutch, will be more expensive, of course. But, don't care about this, because you will find many good brazilian brands at shopping centers. 2 - FRIENDSHIP Brazilians are very friendly. Mainly with foreigners because we are too much obsessive about the image of Brazil. Brazilians are very receptive for tourists or people who wish living here. Brazilian girls are easer to make friends. They talks with any person independent if he/she is ugly, poor or idiot. The World is not divided in "Winners" and "loosers", for us, brazilians. So, don't try changing their mind, with well accepted concepts in the USA, please. You will make friends so easily and quick that it can look different to you. Your new friends (girls) probably will treat you as they was a friend of you since ten years ago. This may be a little bit strange for you since you don't know her... Brazilian girls talks with no stop, sometimes. Be patient, please... Brazilians kisses two or three times when somebody is introduced, be man or woman. It's natural, here. Brazilians are very, very informal and will call you for your first name - Alyssa. Not your family name. As any other girl in Brazil, you will create a profile in Orkut. It's similar to MySpace and everybody have a profile in www.orkut.com. (OBS. Don't pay attention if a brazilian say he/she will call you later in cell phone, because is just all he or she will not do. This is a way for cuting/avoid conversations when they don't wants to talk with you.) 3 - US CITIZENSHIP No. You will not discriminated for your citzenship. But, if you become to support the acts of George Bush in Iraq, people will conden you atitude, of course. Brazilians loves all and everyplace. We have no enemies and almost nobody hate us (only due football/soccer).... 4 - THONGS Well. Almost every brazilian woman who loves Sun and beaches, wear small bikinis. This is our culture. Brazilian girls don't see a problem for wearing a very small bikini. This means not they are immoral or "easy for sex". To look beatiful and sexy is a good for brazilian women, not a sin for them. There's no age or marital state limit for it. If you are walking on the beaches at sunday morning, for example, you see families with young mons (20-35) almost naked (wearing very, very small bikinis) with their babies/children and the husband is close. You see these girls/women wearing thongs on the beaches and they loves this. It's not considered sexual exploration. But, they are beautiful and likes to show as beatiful they are. So, it's natural for them. There's a invisible competition among them to probe who have the most perfect body. This is a exibithionism, of course. But most brazilians everybody loves this freedom. We grow accostumed to watch many documentaries about our native (naked) indians, so, we have not too much problem about nudity as people have about this in USA. Even journalists wear thongs when in a report about summer or something like this. Observe only women/gilrs with big *sses waer thongs. People thinks a little bit ridicule when a woman with no *ss is wearing thong. Sorry, but this is your case (don't be offended), your friends will help you to choose an appropiated bikini. See this ((a fashion designer help girls to choose the best bikinis for them): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5MuJX4qNv3A 5 - BRZILIAN MEN I must to confess, Brazilian men are a little bit submissive to their girl friends. Women rules (in therms of love) in most relations because women has that men are looking for, so, they rules...But, you will see some guys who think that they are doing a favor to be a boy friend of a beautful girl. Like that idiots we see on movies: they are the captain of football team and are members of a brotherhood at some top University, and they think girls must worship them. Some guys are thus, even in Brazil. I had seeing many people from USA asking for more information about they consider normal but is a tru streotype for us: possessive men who are violent against women. It's not true. Violent men are in any place of the World and Brazil is not an expection, but, is not the best place for seeing this. I know men from USA was pointed as the most agressive in the World due extra level of testosteron and I watch Law & Order... Well, beasts are present at every country but i'ts not normal in the USA or Brazil. Do you agree? Brazilians has no problems about different ages. I know 13/14 y.o. teenagers don't have friends above 17 y.o. in USA, Unfortunately people thinks this is strange and some, thinks this is pevert. Im' 43, and I'm talking with you, and I know if was in USA, this probably would result in a investigation by FBI. But, brazilians make friend at any age and you see guys with more than 20 y.o. talking or laying football/volleyball or videogame with teenagers or children less than 10 years. This not means that you see groups of friends with ages between 13 and 60 y.o. walking toghether looking for some fun. Not, of course, but, people don't think is so strange persons of different ages talking or playing some game. This is Brazil. 6 - FOOD I think Brazilian food delicious. But you find easy typical food from USA here: McDonald's and other US/Brazilian chains, hot dogs at any place, pizza like in Italy and too much snacks at hypermarkets. But, if you wish to pass all the time eating brazilian food. Nice. We love beans and rice, steak and ..., fish, spaghetti, etc. Furthemore, I advice you experience "coxinha" (http://images.google.com.br/images?hl=pt-BR&q=coxinha&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wi), "risole" (http://images.google.com.br/images?um=1&hl=pt-BR&q=risole&btnG=Pesquisar+imagens)and "pastel" (http://images.google.com.br/images?um=1&hl=pt-BR&q=pastel&btnG=Pesquisar+imagens). Very delicious. Candies are the best of the world: quindim (http://images.google.com.br/images?um=1&hl=pt-BR&q=quindim ), pudim (http://images.google.com.br/images?um=1&hl=pt-BR&q=pudim&btnG=Pesquisar+imagens ), brigadeiro (http://images.google.com.br/images?um=1&hl=pt-BR&q=brigadeiro ), bomba, rocambole and others. I'm sure you will love all. 7 - PLACES Stay away from the favelas (slums). People there are nice and worker but, there are many trafficants who control the drugs sales and the guys have many guns and weapon for wars. So, take care to stay far from these places. Almost all problem of violence in Rio, for example, are concentraded in these areas. What you must to visit depends on where you will live. What do you think of Brazil?

What do you think of Brazil?
What do you think of Brazil? I'm a Canadian exchange student in Santa Catarina, Brazil, and my friends are always asking me what American's and Canadians think of Brazil, in general. That they live in the Amazon? They have no running water or electricity? In general, what do you think of Brazil

for some reason whenever i hear the word brazil i always think of black chicks with huge butts...
2 :
That it is the world's largest contiguous stretch of INHABITABLE terrain, as all its rivals have huge tracts of torrid desert or frozen tundra, and that, being so large, you can find in it whatever you are looking for, from São Paulo state with an area, population, standard of living and GDP, equivalent to Spain, to Piaui with all the wretched poverty of Bangladesh. Want the wild west of the 1880s, go to Imperatriz in Maranhão, want the finest Baroque architecture in the New World go to Salvador for the 16th century variety or Ouro Preto for the 18th century style. And if Salvador is almost the New World's oldest city, Brasília is still its most recent and modern. Want tropical rain forest, go to parts of Amazonia (while it is still there). Want apple orchards on land high enough to have snow every winter, go to Santa Catarina around Lajes. Want the world's largest waterfalls, visit Foz de Iguaçu. And there is a similar variety of inhabitants, among whom I like particularly the Paulistanos, remembering being in a long line for a taxi outside the Bienal when four young men jumped the queue. The crowd was about to lynch them when someone explained, "São latinoamericanos," by which he meant Argentines or possibly Paraguayans. Given this explanation with its assumption that one could hardly expect civilised behaviour from such people, the situation was immediately defused and we continued waiting peacefully for other taxis to arrive (which with admirable rapidity, they did).
3 :
Your friends, like many Brazilians, are very self-conscious about how Brazil is perceived in North America. They've been brainwashed into thinking that all Americans are ignorant about Brazil, that we think the capitol is Buenos Aires, that we think monkeys run around in the streets of São Paulo. Tell them that Americans know that Brazil is a major influence in the world--a modern, emerging, exciting economy. We know that Brazil exports cars and airplanes. We know that Brazilians speak Portuguese. And we are watching them with enthusiasm, waiting for the next big thing that Brazil and Brazilians will do in the world. Please try to encourage them to see us as worldly people, not gringos.
4 :
Well! I suppose that this question was to non-Brazilians. Anyway, it's normal to think this way about Brazil to foreign people. It's not their fault, but maybe their masters. C'mon! If I didn't have running water, I'd be sick and I couldn't talk to anyone here, which it shows that I've got eletricity. They think we live in 1500; hahaha. That's funny because they just wonder abou what they see on movies. It's not because the biggest part of Amazon is in Brazil that there are monkeys, Amerindians etc., on the streets. By the way, even in Manaus, which is in Amazon, is bigger than too many other cities which is too far from the coast.
5 :
I"m Brazilian, so for me is a big city. You will go to know different people because the Brazil has many different city. I live in São Paulo and here the people work a lot of. But here we are different city. I traveled for Amazon, Fortaleza and Recife, but Fortaleza is BEAUTIFUL in Rio de Janeiro, has violence. So, travel for Fernando de Noronha, Amazon, Santa Catarina, Fortaleza, the Brazil is very big and please come back for here, you 'll go to like. (please: sorry because I' m leaning englih yet)
6 :
Nobody like Brazilians. Europeans and North-Americans just like of Samba and the beautiful women. Lá fora somos só lixos. Quem vem pra cá só quer saber de farrear e pegar as mulheres daqui.

Study abroad students/Brazil?

Study abroad students/Brazil?
Hey, I am planning a trip to Brazil (study abroad) for february 2012 - July 2012. I have never been to the country (language is not an issue to me as I am a native spanish speaker whcih is similar to portuguese and I have also taken some Portuguese course, planning on taking more this fall. For those who have studied abroad to Brazil or else where, how did you finance your education abroad. I am not speaking about tuition and school fees but more like personal expenses while abroad. I have a job after school, a junior in college. I am thinking 2,000 dollars wont be enough to stay in Brazil and entire semester, that's really all I can afford. But, I may be wrong, as my program of study provides and pays for excursion trips and I am also doing a homestay. Plus my tuition abroad is less expensive than that at my home institution. Do you guys suggest I ask for another loan? Should I go for it (the study abroad program). Should I try my best to save more? If you have studied abroad how much money did you took abroad. Any help and suggestions? I really want to do this, it is the only year I could because my home institution requires that I finish my senior year in it, therefore I wont be able to study abroad pass this coming year. If i cant make it this Spring 2012, I was thinking I can try going for summer and staying for one month (july-aug). But I just feel that a month is not enough and I will just miss out on all the phone :( Any thoughts??? Thanks so much! Sorryyyyyyyyyy I ment fun :)

I completed a Study Abroad to Brazil this past January and it was a wonderful experience. Lucky for you the US dollar is worth more than Brazilian currency (the market fluctuates so it's wise to check the foreign exchange rate from time to time). My advice to you is to create a budget before you go. Try to figure out approximately how much you will have to spend on food--if anything since you're doing a home-stay--and other expenses (clothes and souvenir shopping, toiletries, activities that are not covered through the program). Also, if you haven't already, make an appointment with an advisor in the SA office. He/she should be able to help you determine the costs you will incur.

little money .... here things are much more expensive in the United States.

Any ideas for a way to greet a friend at the airport?
I'm going with my family to pick up an exchange student from Brazil and I need something creative to take with me to pick her up. I would take a sign and balloons, but that's too original. I need something better :)

um i cant think of anything other than a really big sign, maybe a pizza? she might be hungry from the plane or a dessert. It might be her first american food :) make sure she doesn't have any food allergies
2 :
Sign and balloons EDIT: @<3 You do know, Pizza isn't American, and the US isn't the only country in the world that eats pizza. Brazilians do too lol.
3 :
Put on a Brazilian football (soccer) jersey and welcome her in Portuguese (Brazilian language).
4 :
A sign with helium balloons is good enough. You don't want to embarrass your exchange student at the get-go by being so extravagant. Tell her you will be the one with the balloons so it will be easier for her to spot you. Since a bouquet of balloons attracts attention, you don't want to overdo it. Balloons are fun and festive, so just keep it simple. She may be overwhelmed coming to this country. Don't overwhelm her with embarrassment.

I went to brazil + married my girlfriend last year so she could stay in the UK, how hard is it to get divorced?
I would not normally have chose to marry her but we were in love at the time and her student visa had expired, therefore i went to brazil and married her over there so she could stay with me in the UK, none of my friends or family even know we are married, we have now split up and I want to know how easy it will be to get a divorce, how much it will cost etc.

why would you do it..if you want to get a divorce
2 :
Get a lawyer..and apply for divorce.
3 :
Go to the Brazilian embassy and talk to the legal Consul about getting a annulment or divorce from a court over there, try to talk to a lawyer there in the UK too while your at it, they can best give you the answer your seeking. Sounds like she is using her marriage as a way to stay in the country at your expense.
4 :
Well it depends. I heard it cost around $2,000 , But then again I live in Pennsylvania. It won`t be too hard if you BOTH want to get divorced but if she still loves you and wants to be with you its gonna be hard for her to get the divorce papers, sign them, and split half the money. That's love for ya!
5 :
Make sure you get legal advice in advance. You could otherwise be seen as providing her with an illegal means to stay in the UK. (marrying for a residency permit)

Not to sound bias nor racist but I am not interested in caucasian or asian woman at my alta mater (maybe because I grew up in a all asian community and served in the army where the whole population was caucasian) Can somebody please tell me how the universities are in Brazil or the women who attend the schools?

There are many universities in Brazil with international agreement for transferring students. I can suggest this one: www.ufsc.br It is located in Santa Catarina state and it is a strong university in technological and medical areas. I have studied there and I knew many students from another countries. About the women, in the south of Brazil the majority is Caucasian (Germans, Italian, Russian, etc) but you can find also Africans.

What course and where to study if I wanna act in Movies?
That's what I want to know. I wanna act, but I seek TV Series or Movies, not Drama though. Could anyone help me giving directions of wich course I should take and in wich College or State so I can get what I want? I'm a international student from Brazil and it's really though getting that kind of information through the Internet. It'd be a lot easier to get that kind of information through real people who have been through the same situation or work with this. Thanks a lot for the attention. Hey, first... I don't know how to give answers to answers to my question. How do I do that? Second... Yeah, there are opportunities in Brazil but it's mostly for Drama. I want movies... xD And you guys only chose BIG BIG names... I'm thinking of maybe starting at a Community College, than transfering... Or do you guys think that will suck?

try the actor's studio in new york.
2 :
NYU, Tisch, Yale, Harvard or anywhere in Los Angeles if it doesn't have to be attached to University... Checkout WorkingActors.com, click on actors, then on training and there are plenty of classes and workshops not attached to college curriculum. There are also opportunities in Brazil, have you checked that out first?
3 :
Try NYFA in New York City. It's the New York Film Accademy. It's really great but it's also REALLY expensive.
4 :
As an actor you DO NOT determine where you will perform. You are NOT the Talent Agent or the Casting Director. The Talent Agent determines where his/her clients are best suited, they are the industry professionals. There are many top schools for theatre. It depends on which city in the USA you want to live. Make that decision first and then narrow it down to the school that may interest you. You may, at some point, want to come to the city of your choice and ask the University if you can observe some of the classes, to see if that's right for you. Be sure you enroll in a University and not a school that teaches film, as that is TOTALLY useless.

BRAZILIAN STUDENT MOVING TO THE USA - WHICH CITY TO CHOOSE?
Okay, I'd love to live in New York City. But people keep talking about how cold it is and that I wouldnt like, because in the city I live in Brazil it is pretty hot. The second choice would be Miami, which have pretty much the same climate as Salvador in Brazil, but is NO NEW YORK. I just wanted to live in the top city of the world, where everything happens, dont know tho if I could really face the cold.

Miami is very much like South America, a lot of hispanics and a lot of Brazilians. You don't need to speak english there. The big cities are nice but, very expensive! I would go to AUSTIN TX, it's college town, a lot of young people and students like you, lots of parties, but the biggest attraction in Austin are the 2 big lakes (lake Travis and Lake LBJ) lots of beaches and parties... and it doen't get cold. Economy is growing, it's not facing challenges from the current crises like California, Florida and NY etc... It's a great place to live if you don't like cold. South of Austin you can go white water rafting, and there also the biggest outlet mall in TX. San Antonio is just 45 Min away and there's a lot to do there. LA is nice, but California and also Florida are VERY expensive! And they have a lot o problems right now because of the economic crises.

I think movies and television make NYC out to be far more glamorous than it really is. Not everything happens in New York - what is it that you're really looking for? If you want to be 'where everything happens' that's not freezing cold, go to Los Angeles. It's a far more international and busy city than Miami. Both LA and Miami are sprawling car-centric cities though. If the thing you find appealing about NYC is the super-urban cosmopolitan lifestyle - go to San Francisco. It's a similar lifestyle, but the weather is 10 times better, the people are younger, and the attitude is more laid back. If you're going to study, you might consider Boston. Yeah it's freezing cold, but it's kind of like a mini New York filled with college students. It's far cheaper to live there. NYC is a 3 hour bus ride from there, easy to take weekend trips.

Your primary concern will be getting a visa. You cannot just "move' to the u.S. If you want to attend university in the U.S., you must apply and get accepted, then apply for a student visa. then you may come, attend your university and work up to 20 hours a week on campus only. WHERE you live would depend on what university you re accepted to. You will need to be able to prove you have enough only to support yourself and pay your tuition. So, first, see site below and learn about the student visa requirements.
5 :
If you are rich, I would say Chicago or Boston. If you are middle-class, I would say Orlando If you don't have money, go to whatever small town will take you in.

Universities in Melbourne for an average student?

Universities in Melbourne for an average student?
I live in Brazil but I'm moving in march to melbourne, so i basically wanted to have an idea about the universities in melbourne..I'm not an excellent student, I would say about average. My overall GPA in high school was 2.7 I think, so yea, just wanted to know about some universities for an average grade student. really appreciate it

um i dont think we go by GPA so that 2.7 doesnt give us an idea of how well or not your going.... definitely Vic Uni is known for acceptance of average grades so check up there...and La trobe possibly...really depends on the pre requisites of the course and whether you hold all of what is required so what would you like to study? grab yourself a VTAC guide which tells you whats required for each course etc....and see whats there for you good luck
2 :
I did year 12 last year so I'm going to uni this year but don't know how different countries compare with their scoring systems. To get into uni straight after highschool you need to get an Atar score, the uni's in melbourne tend to have a higher score needed to get in as they more popular being in the city. For example at Deakin Uni, the course i wanted to do was an 80 something in Melbourne, 60 somthing in Geelong (just over an hour away) and then 50 something at the Warnabool campus which is even further away.I'm lucky that I live in Geelong as I got enough to get in there but not in Melbourne but the courses are still exactly the same. It's going to depend on which uni and which course you choose but you may need to travel a little bit. Although depending on how old you are you can apply as a mature age student then you don't need the atar score but there is other requirements. Like the other person said if you can get a VTAC guide then that will be a great help, it has been like a bible to me for the last few months, also call up some different uni's to get some more help

Can i pay US student loans if i move overseas?

Can i pay US student loans if i move overseas?
And would there be a decrease in the amount i would have to pay since my salary would be much lower in Brazil. Is there a website i can use to do a research on this topc? Thank you so much I wil be moving abroad right after college...

No. You owe them--and you have to pay them a certain amount. It matters not how much you make, unfortunately.
2 :
YES, YES, YES...to all three questions. You can pay US student loans wherever you go in the world (they would think this was very nice of you actually). Your amount you would have to pay COULD be reduced due to salary ("Loan payments are limited to no more than 15 percent of the amount by which the borrower's AGI exceeds 150 percent of the poverty line income applicable to borrowers' family size"). And the website you need to go to check it is below. You MAY want to take advantage of the income-based repayment (IBR) program available to both FFEL and Direct Loan borrowers on all Stafford and graduate PLUS loans. This will provide a loan forgiveness after 25 years of payments, as due to your income, your payments may not keep up with interest and it would really never be paid off. Good luck--Hope this helps! +Magnoaldus

What vaccinations do I need for Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil?

What vaccinations do I need for Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil?
I'm going to be an exchange student there, and I'm leaving in just a few weeks. What shots do I need/are required? And do they hurt...I was really little the last time i received any shots, so I don't remember how bad they hurt...Although, I did have a dentist give me shots to my lower gums, and that was extremely unpleasant, but it didn't necessarily hurt. Is it anything like that?

Since China is a huge economic power and will likely dominate ( along with India) world markets, you should consider learning Chinese. Be sure to check your spelling: it is not "carrier" but "career". As a future lawyer you will be aware of the power of words, and correct spelling is vital. Hope this helps.

Brazil is a developing country and a newly industrialized nation. It still has many problems with poverty, but the economy and standard of living have improved a lot in the last decade or so. It's always been rich country because it has many great resources.
2 :
Could you start with learning English before asking?
3 :
Brazil is a rich country with a high percentage of poor people. This is primarily due to the lack of education amongst the poor and the correspondingly low literacy rate. The one thing that gets overlooked is that Brazil has the highest percentage and number of happy people in the world. The Scandanavian countries are the lowest.

Which cities do you intend to visit in Brazil?
2 :
Rio is beautiful and amazing. Your best option I think. There are many resources online for researching. There are a few hostel websites that you should look at. Just type "hostels" into any search field and you'll get a list. That may be a good option for you (low cost and others that are younger).

Do I count as an international student to colleges?

Do I count as an international student to colleges?
I'm a U.S citizen and I lived in America until the 7th grade, but since then due to my dads job I've lived in different countries like China, India and Brazil, and as far as I know I will be graduating from the American School of Paris. I was wondering if colleges will consider me an international student? I mean international student in America*

You are an American citizen, meaning that you are an International student to every other country in the world, an a Out-of-State student in America, unless you move back with your parents, they might give you In-State if you attend in the state that they move to.

What to expect in Brazil?

What to expect in Brazil?
I just found out that I have been accepted for a scholarship and will be an exchange student in Florianopolis, Brazil for 6 months. Can someone tell me, or give me an idea of what to expect? :P What is considered impolite, what are the people like, etc... and what is the school system like? Is it comparable to Canada, at all? I am very confused.

I have been to Brazil a few times, not to Florianopolis, but I do know people who have, so I will tell you what I can and I hope it helps. I have traveled to different parts of Brazil and I have always found the people very nice. Brazil does have a high crime rate though, so when you go places try to go in a group and definitely go in a group at night. I wouldn't go anywhere by yourself until you get a feel for the place. Do not make the "ok" sign (thumb and pointer finger making a circle and three other fingers spread out) it is consider a very vulgar hand signal (like the middle finger). Also do not put your purse on the floor. That is something prostitutes do. Florianopolis is a surfing town. They have very nice beaches, so I am sure you will have a nice time. There is also a lot of German influence in Brazil. Many Germans immigrated to Brazil. I believe there is a neat German town somewhere near there. I hope that helps! That is some of the advice I was given before I traveled there. It is a wonderful country.
