What to expect in Brazil?
I just found out that I have been accepted for a scholarship and will be an exchange student in Florianopolis, Brazil for 6 months. Can someone tell me, or give me an idea of what to expect? :P What is considered impolite, what are the people like, etc... and what is the school system like? Is it comparable to Canada, at all? I am very confused.

I have been to Brazil a few times, not to Florianopolis, but I do know people who have, so I will tell you what I can and I hope it helps. I have traveled to different parts of Brazil and I have always found the people very nice. Brazil does have a high crime rate though, so when you go places try to go in a group and definitely go in a group at night. I wouldn't go anywhere by yourself until you get a feel for the place. Do not make the "ok" sign (thumb and pointer finger making a circle and three other fingers spread out) it is consider a very vulgar hand signal (like the middle finger). Also do not put your purse on the floor. That is something prostitutes do. Florianopolis is a surfing town. They have very nice beaches, so I am sure you will have a nice time. There is also a lot of German influence in Brazil. Many Germans immigrated to Brazil. I believe there is a neat German town somewhere near there. I hope that helps! That is some of the advice I was given before I traveled there. It is a wonderful country.
