How possible is it to me to get into MIT?
How possible is it to me to get into MIT?
Hello folks, As I'm planning to apply to MIT, I'm concerned about the university's requirements for applicants. I'm currently living in Brazil, so I should apply as an international student. Regarding the following SAT scores: 760 Math Level 2 780 Physics What are my chances of being accepted by the admissions office? Also, what can I do to improve my chances? Thanks in advance! Sandro

MIT acceptance rate is 10% and their international student population is under 8%. Even with your great SAT scores you still only have a slim chance of getting in.
2 :
Everyone applying to MIT has the highest grades in the hardest classes and very high test scores. You need that to get in, and then you need a lot more - science and math teams, original research, patents, experience in the field you're interested in, etc. Your test scores are average for MIT applicants and you didn't give any other information - your chances are less than 10%.
3 :
I think you should do Advanced Placement exams (check www.collegeboard.com) and Try doing any A-levels (if you can do that in your area). Contact the school(in M.I.T.) you want to enroll in and do what they tell you to.

What's an "american salary"? Brazil is inside America. Brazil is America. Not Europe, Asia, Africa or Oceania... Man, we are the 8th economy in the world. Our GDP is above 1 trillion dollars and you thing that brazilian wages are miserable? Some job areas as system analisys, advertsing, telecommunication engineering, and others may to earn more than US$ 7,000/month. A volleyball player, deputy, judge, general mannager and others, US$ 10,000 to US$ 20,000/month. A director, soccer player, TV Host, news anchor, actor, plastic surgeons and some others, more than US$ 30,000 to US$ 300,000. Some TV stars, earn more than 1 million dollars/month! Some predident, CEO and high executives, more than 2 million dollars/month!!! Do you need more??

To work in Brazil, you need a Permanent Visa. Getting such Visa is not easy because, like most countries, Brazilian legislation attempts to protect the nationals. A Visa application must be accompanied by documents showing that a national could not take the job; the Ministers of Justice and Labor must approve the Visa. The job and salary you will get will depend on your abilities. In Brazil, no one can be paid in dollars; you will have to be paid in Reais. I heard that some companies pay salaries in dollars deposited in the US; I think that this is legal, as long as payments are declared and taxes are paid.

POLL: should I go to Brazil during or after New Years?
I'm a college student planning on going to brazil for 2 weeks during my winter break from school. Usually break is from mid december to end of january. I'm being pressured by my family in brazil to come the day after christmas, but I'm not sure if i want to spend new years down there, even though where im going in brazil has a beautiful new years and itll be summer there when its winter here. December is a little busy for me with the holidays going on and seeing family and friends you havent seen for months. I figured id go in january when things calm down but tickets might be a little more expensive. so what do you think, screw it and party hard in brazil or balance my vacation out and go after new years?

Study, Work and live abroad in Brazil (for like 1-3 years)?
Study, Work and live abroad in Brazil (for like 1-3 years)?
Just wondering how the whole process works for studying abroad in Brazil. From what I understand You can take classes there for a semster to a year to learn portuguese and then can u simply enroll In a Brazillian University? Just wondering how easy is it for a foerigner (american) to be accepted into a Brazillian university? Also how expensive will it be (will it be free if I'm considered a resident and pay taxes). Also how easy can you find a decent job and still study as a student? Basically I wanna study abroad and possibly enroll in a university there in about a year or so. Can somebody enlighten me (not with just a link to a WEB site) Any personal experiance? Cost is an issue, Can you find scholarships easily or any other ways? Plus how long is an undergrad degree in brazil (i read that it was like 10 semesters) Plus are there associate degrees in Brazil? I've been trying to do some reseacrch but there is so much buerocracy and bad info --THX--

Rolando, At first, you must to get a Temporary Visa "VITEM-IV" for students. This don't permit to work while you be studying, but you may get a way to earn money in a not formal activity. If you play some instrument, or sing, or does magic, or paint, or make any other artistic and not employed activity, it's OK. You can show you in night clubs or publish an add in a newspaper selling your paintings, drawings, etc. We have many students from different parts of the world, (from the so-called latinos and neighbors to swedish and russian) studying here, but the classes are in portuguese. Buy some english-portuguese dictionary, a grammatic and some other like "how to say it in portuguese" and study these for three or four months before you come to Brazil. Arriving here, search for a intensive course for foreigners to understand conversation and to speak without accent. For to be accept, your high school diploma must be recognized in Brazil, but I think that Brazil and USA have a treat for it. Well, you don't told us what is the field in goal, but I can give you an idea about all. Federal Universities are the best and, the best about it is that all are totally free. No taxes, fees, etc. Only pass the exame (every october-december we have the "vestibular") and joy. Applications for vestibular to UFRJ is closed this year. Next vestibular inscription in august, 2008. Others, begin in september for many universities. Another, in october. Keep alert! I'm from Rio, then, the following explanations will be based in a supposed life in Rio. I think that you prefer to pay nothing to study. So, you must to be an applicant for vestibular of UNIVERSIDADE FEDERAL DO RIO DE JANEIRO (UFRJ) or UNIVERSIDADE FEDERAL FLUMINENSE (UFF) or UNIVERSIDADE ESTADUAL DO RIO DE JANEIRO (UERJ). If the carreer is veterinary, you must to apply for UNIVERSIDADE FEDEARL RURAL DO RIO DE JANEIRO. If your carreer is Physics, you can try CBPF, very very good (two of the Meson-Pi discovers worked there) wit a concept 6 or 7 (maximum). All those offers residence (apartments) in their campus, except UERJ and CBPF. And the dormitories are free of taxes. But, suppose that you don't pass at the exam. Then apply for a ingress in a good particular university. The best is Rio are PUC (Catholic university excelent, but expensive), Gama Filho (expensive), Uinivercidade, Veiga de Almeida and Estácio or Uniestácio (these three excelent and less expensive). The awards in these are a traditional bachelor's degree - four years (8 semesters) of study. In a specific cases, three years in some courses. Estácio have a traditional undergraduate degree (Bachelors degree) and, also, a politechnic institute with awards after two or two and half year - four or five semesters (Associate degree equivalent) - in many fields since gastronomy to computers networks. From graphic design to aeronautics (pilot). See the website and you will have an best idea about what I'm telling you. I think that Estácio is the best choice for you. For this university you must to pay a montly tax between R$ 280,00 - R$ 450,00 (about US$ 140.00 - US$ 220.00), very low taxes. The exame is easy and the university does a new "vestibular" every two months. The bad thing about is that you must a residence. The cheaper are vacancy at residences. Some persons above 60 years rent a room in their apartments. Take a credential and good references translated and apply for one. This may costs between R$ 300,00 to R$ 550,00 (US$ 140.00 - US$ 220.00) for month. Plus metrô (subway) tickets - at least, two for day - and you will expend more R$ 100,00 (some like US$ 45.00) in twenty days. I think that i'ts enough for while. Include a comment if some other information be necessary. See the links bellow (I suggest Babelfish web translator).

Took the TOEFL last month and got 91 outta 120 in it. I wanna get a schollarship in the US... Is it gonna be real tough? What about my age? Is it a problem? What are the Colleges where I could take that? Can anyone help me out? Thanks A LOT.

Best way to ship a digital camera worth about $150?
Best way to ship a digital camera worth about $150?
I am currently an exchange student in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil and my camera disappeared so I need a new one. I want to order one online and have it sent to my house in the U.S. since the prices in Brazil are ridiculous. What would be best way for my parents to send it? I don't have a CPF number and I don't want to pay that crazy import tax since I'm a student, and I'm not working and I don't want to have to pay for the camera twice just to get it!

you´re gonna have to pay taxes anyway, be prepared to pay at least 60 dollars in the mail office

The joys of being a foreigner. I´m an exchange student in Teresópolis, Rio de Janeiro. You can use your parents CPF number I suppose? The import tax is inevitable though. Its a new item.. you must pay. Think of it this way. The camera here would cost.. probably $500-600 reais. Minimum. Works out to $300ish american. You´ll still be saving money. Get your host parents to help you look to see if there are any loopholes on a gov´t website. Good luck

illegal immigrant Student Visa Help.?
illegal immigrant Student Visa Help.?
So I'm Brazilian and 17 years old in my junior year of high school here in America. Im an illegal immigrant but I'm planing to head back to Brazil and filing for a student visa. Will it work? My grades are good and i never committed a crime. Im leaving as soon as im 18 years old and finishing the rest of my high school in Brazil. As soon as i graduate could i file for a student visa? I have an aunt and uncle who are citizens here in the U.S if that helps and I scored 28 on the ACT and 1450 on the SAT. I might come back at 19 and try joining the military through naturalization. Could i qualify for a social security if i do the student visa?

It may work. It depends on how old you were when coming here. If your parents forced you, you would have a better chance.
2 :
You could do that but you will have to be convincing during your interview for the visa. Your overstay as a minor will not be used against you but it will make the consular officer nervous about issuing you a new visa. You cannot enlist in the US military unless you have a Green Card or are a US citizen.

I have a question about student foreign exchanging?
I have a question about student foreign exchanging?
Okay so I'm looking up all these foreign exchanging sites and most of the requirements listed are at least two years of high school (so pretty much just 15 or older) and that you need to have at least a year experience in the language. Well I have two students in my school one is a foreign exchange student and the other foreign exchanged her junior year in Brazil. So the foreign exchange student here only came to the U.S. from Brazil knowing the basics of English, "How are you", "My name is", "Where is the bathroom". And the other girl who went to Brazil only went there knowing four words in Portuguese. So does it all just depend on what abroad program you use? Or if you already had experience in a similar language, like spanish would they overlook the fact that you haven't really study the specific language required for your destination?

Hi there. For the program I went abroad with, Rotary Club, I didn't have to know the language. However, I went to a country with a rarely spoken language in the US. It didn't matter though, by the 3rd and 4th month you will be proficient in the language of whatever country you go to as long as you insist on speaking it and enjoy the process of learning. If I were you I would only try Rotary club, sometimes AFS. Rotary does not make you know the language, that is kind of silly. Also Rotary needs students to apply and are very nice people. That is Rotary International. Every town has one in the US and it is just as popular abroad. All you pay for is the plane ticket. btw, search for other questions like this for more info. There are a few recently resolved. Bon Voyage!!
2 :
It depends on the program and the destination country. Some places, like France or Spain, are more likely to have a language requirement of a year or two, but this doesn't mean ALL of France does -- for example, I am with Rotary. Some parts of France require Rotary kids to know some French before leaving, but my friend went to France and she'd never studied it, so it really depends. Other places, like Thailand or Brazil or Finland, often won't have a language requirements, because let's face it -- how many high schools offer classes in Thai, Portuguese, or Finnish? They MIGHT if they happen to have a teacher who knows those, but it's certainly not very common, so if countries with unusual languages had such requirements, hardly anyone would be eligible. But lots of kids study languages like French and Spanish, so those countries can choose to be a little pickier if they want. My Rotary district had no language requirements for any of the countries offered, and we had the usual ones like France, Belgium, German, Brazil, Mexico, Norway, Sweden, Argentina, Peru, Japan, etc.
3 :
It doesn't so much depend upon the program you use, but the destination. For example, if you are going to France or the French speaking portions of Switzerland or Belgium, you need two years of high school French. However, if you are going to Sweden or Germany (or many other choices) you don't need language experience. Often, the language requirements for Americans going overseas are less than for others going to America. Other countries recognize the lack of language training in the U.S. However, the requirements coming into the US are more stringent -- generally a 40 on the SLEP is required, although some of those scores are "fudged" a bit. The organization you choose will give you the information on the destinations. Also, while I might point out Rotary is a great program, the difficulty of getting in depends upon where you live. You might also consider YFU or AFS.

I really wanna visit Brazil, but I'm only 18 and haven't traveled before. How does one start? Help please! :(
Well, just actually turned 18 a week ago.. I'm also still a student here in the Philippines and don't earn my own money. :( I've been wanting to go to Brazil since I was 15.. Now I think I'm ready than ever, at least, as myself. The problem is what actually is the first step in achieving this dream trip? Help please... I really haven't travelled before. Do u guys think I could actually compensate for this trip? But I seriously want to, and I'm ready to do anything. So please, any suggestions or proven ways that u know for my trip to be made possible, I'D BE MORE THAN THANKFUL. Please no trash posts. Muito obrigada! hey Abby! I already have a passport. (^.^).. Uhm,, what's next??.. Derek! Sou garota, sim.. hehehe Well the plane ticket cost is what I'm most worried about.. I mean, I should find ways to earn that amount of money.. huhu.. but besides that, would another thing cost that much or even more?? I have a number of friends there with whom I have constant communication online. But I'd love to be in contact with u too! Have u ever been to Brazil? Again, muito obrigadA.. (^.^) hehe

You must start by getting a passport.
2 :
I assume you are a woman because you said "muito obrigada". For one you need visa and a passport(if you are a american citizen) Plane costs can be about $900-$1400. Go to the nearest brasilian embassy and request a visa. You may be able to apply by mail. Go to the post office and get a passport application. Do you know anyone there? If you don't just tell me and I maybe able to help. Capisco-lei@hotmail.com

Brazilian exchange student coming!?
Brazilian exchange student coming!?
Soon, a Brazilian exchange student (15-yr-old boy) will be staying at my home for 4 weeks. What are typical foods eaten in Brazil for breakfast, lunch and dinner? Oh, and snacks and beverages?

Can't help you but how exciting. Hope you have fun.
2 :
Breakfast: milk, bread with butter Lunch: orange juice, beef, rice, beans and french fries Dinner: lasagna or soap or chicken pie or etc, with soda. And other variations, of course. Edit Someone said nacho in your other question, ignore, nacho is not eaten in Brazil.
3 :
biscuits, tea, cookies, muffins
4 :
Alot of white rice (cooked with salt and garlic), black beans, and fruit. Part of his experience here will be discovering what American foods he will like. Hopefully he speaks a little English or you a little Portuguese, so you can ask him what he likes. I would recommend not to turn your home into Brazil, but let him learn as much as possible about your way of life. That's what the experience is about. I'm sure it will be a great learning experience for all of you. How exciting! And remember, you can instantly translate any phrase on Babelfish.com. Good luck!
5 :
I agree with the above answer, that he is probably excited to eat a lot of western food. If you are intent on serving Brazilian food, just stick to rice, and lot of meat. Brazilians love BBQ! It would be great to host a BBQ in his honor. Other than that, Brazilians typically eat lunch as the largest meal of the day. They usually eat beans, rice, meat and farofa (a toasted flour) or pao de caiju (little cheese buns.) Dinner is usually not more than a snack in Brazil. Typical is some different fruits (mango, banana, papaya, guava) and cashews.
6 :
Other contributers are correct-students usually like American food (as crappy and bland as it is...). At least our Japanese students did. Be prepared to make more rice/less potatoes, more beef/less chicken. Or just ask what he prefers. In fact a good technique is to let the student prepare a dinner meal each week that represents his home country. Plan the meal and shopping with him/her, and help in the kitchen. Make plenty extra so that there will be plenty leftovers for after school. PS-sign him up for the high school soccer team. Chances are he'll run circles around the Varsity players.
7 :
He can get Brazilian food at home. Cook him some grits, sausage and gravy!
8 :
Chicken, white rice, black beans.... this is basic for him to feel a bit comfortable. You should have him try some of your local favourites too. The reason for being an exchange student is to learn new customs from your host family

What happens if you stay in a country where your visa has expired?
I am from Brazil, and went to Spain as a student. I ended up meeting many friends, and I stayed longer than I was supposed to.. My visa has expired. What can I do now? What happens if I go home? Would I be able to come back? Can I make a new visa? Can I do it in Spain?

That means you are illegally in Spain. You're supposed to go back to Brazil as soon as the visa expires. You should go back as soon as possible. You may or may not be able to go back, depends on Spain's immigration policy.
2 :
You are now an illegal immigrant
3 :
The Schengen Agreement does not only facilitate free travel in Europe it is also a tool of cooperation on the Schengen Information System whose members are: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. In other words you will run into difficulties to enter one of the above countries in future. I can only urge you to get in contact with a respresentative of your Embassy or Consulate immediate and try to fix what can be fixed, if you do not want to be banned from entry to European states. Since Brazilia as on the visa-waiver list for Schengen countries, it might be a chance to change your status from student to visitor. But get it done if you do not want to be treated as an illegal immigrant. what you have done i think is illegal and the authority's could have a warrant out for you, don't worry about it go to the local police station and explain.
2 :
If you try to just go home, they'll find out at the airport that you have overstayed. You'll be banned from entry to all 26 Schengen states. Go to your embassy or to the spanish immigration office. There may be a chance to change your status from student to visitor, since on your Brazilian passport you could travel visa-free as tourist for 90 days. But do that in advance of your departure, or you will risk an entry deny in most of the European states.

Is there anything necessarily wrong with multiculturalism?
Is there anything necessarily wrong with multiculturalism?
I can understand that young children should grow up with a good sense of patriotism instilled in them, but what is wrong with admiring others' cultures as well? If I were a Hispanic student and knew a lot about Brazil or Mexico, I wouldn't mind my teacher's taking a little time out one day of the year to allow me to discuss life in Brazil with my classmates. I haven't gone into detail about this issue, but I was wondering what other people think. Thanks!

I really wish there were more cultured people in the U.S. Some people are so naive about the rest of the world they make me think of them as borderline retards.
3 :
I personally think that it would be really nice to share your life about Brazil, but it depends what the subject is in school. For example, if you are in a Spanish class and they are talking about different countries that would be a great idea.
4 :
You are going to get a lot of stupid answers for this question, mostly from racist and trolls and i am going to get thumbed down but look there is nothing wrong with it. Its actually a good thing mixing races is a beautiful thing and people should respect it
5 :
yep.
6 :
Nothing wrong with it, there has never been a society with no multiculturalism. The problems are in how do you manage it. If you treat them as you treat the existing population then the people don't like it, if you treat them as you think they require then the people don't like it. If you let them do what you like then the people don't like it. This is why politicians were not the correct people to implement it in modern time. You have to let the people do it themselves and give them a chance to work and adjust.
7 :
Acceptance and tolerance of the people around u is a good thing .keeping yourself while keeping an open mind is a wonderful and hard to come by trait .
8 :
No, there is nothing wrong with multiculturalism per se. Every society is diverse and ever changing. I think there are some valid complaints about educators overly romanticizing other cultures, but that comes with the territory. For instance, years ago I taught history in one of the most backward, reactionary areas in the US and my section on Islam was about as generous and open minded as possible. I spent a lot of time trying to calm students fears and I made a point of mentioning the accomplishments of early Islamic scholars in math and science. Today I believe I was simply being naive, but if I taught the same material again (I have taught in a about a decade) I would still lean towards being very generous towards Islam, because frankly all they have to do hear the other view is to turn on talk radio or Fox News. I would try to be honest, but not bigoted. Given the way I have been personally affected by the post 9-11 world that would be a challenge. The point is that it is extremely difficult to be multicultural without romanticizing the culture you are studying and it is hard to be critical of a cultural or religious group without being called a bigot. Someone will always be offended by the truth.

FYI: Brazilians are not Hispanic. We do not speak Spanish.

Study abroad in Brazil or China?
Study abroad in Brazil or China?
I am a business student in the US and trying to figure out where to study abroad! My choices have come down to either Sao Paulo, Brazil, Shanghai, China or Hong Kong. So... I am a business student studying management and entrepreneurship... I am not really considering doing business in either of those countries but I wanted to study abroad for the experience of living in a different place. I am a little worried about the drug use in Brazil because I am just an innocent white girl but Brazil seems more attractive to me than China. Communism sucks (Shanghai) and Hong Kong... its kinda its own little nation. I probably would meet a lot of different kinds of people in Hong Kong but for whatever reason, china just doesn't seem that interesting...

Innocent white girl? You won't stand out in Brazil. We're just like the US. We have every shade of color of people here. European, Asian, Arab, Black etc... Sao Paulo has a lot of japanese people. More japanese outside of japan than US. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberdade I am from Curitiba. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curitiba My grandma and grandpa maternal and paternal came from Germany/Austria/Portugal. I really doubt you will stand out here. Yes in Hong Kong you will stand out like a sore thumb. Here in Brazil??? Only if you open your mouth and speak probably, but we don't mistreat foreigners here. As far as drug use? well.. like they say.. if you look for trouble you'll find trouble. Just like in Europe and USA has it's bad and good areas. If you want to see Chinese people we have them here too HAHAHA. We're not all brown and live in Favelas and have witch doctors in South America hhahahahahahaha

It's definitely worth it to study abroad. All three choices sound great. It sounds like your leaning more toward Brazil. If you don't stick out like a sore thumb... you should be fine. Every place has it's dangerous spots- but study abroad locations do not tend to be located in seedy areas. Business-wise, China and Hong Kong would be fabulous locales. If you're going for more for fun, then don't write off Brazil. If you want to check more into specific programs, I work for a new travel/study abroad website dedicated to sending students overseas. It's called Gulliver (http://www.gullivergo.com). You can search more than 2,000 programs in over 70 countries. Student Exchange?
Student Exchange?
Oi! I'm going on a one year student exchange to northeastern Brazil, leaving in exactly a month today. I was wondering if anyone had anything they could share with me - things I should know, things I should and shouldn't do or say, how it differs from Canadian/American culture, etc I've been studying Portuguese too!! I can't wait to learn more :) Thanks for tuning in, Christine

Hi Christine, both our kids have been on student exchanges; one to Russia, the other to Sweden. It's the best thing that ever happened to them, for different reasons. They've got different personalities and different genders. Both are fluent in their respective languages. You've started right, by learning some of the language. The first few weeks will be tough, but it will get much better. You'll be homesick at first, but you'll quickly make friends and get over that. It gets better because very soon you'll start to understand the language well enough to hold conversations. I've only ever spent a few days in Brazil, so I can't tell you much about the culture. But the other important thing to do before you leave, besides studying Portuguese, is to learn as much as possible about your own history and culture. They'll all expect you to know everything about your own country. Traditional dishes, sport, history, current affairs, music, literature etc. And take lots of cheap trinkets to give away, like fridge magnets, souvenir pens, badges, with a theme about your country on them. You'll never regret your decision to go there, I promise. All the students I've dealt with who've been on an exchange, not just our kids, say it was the smartest thing they ever did. Oh yeah, and take a digital camera and email home millions of photos, or alternatively just take lots of photos.
4 :
send photos!
5 :
Ola Christine! You'll learn lots of new things here. People here usually have more physical contact when they're are talking with other people and when they meet friends. There's a site called Gringoes with more information about Brazil: http://www.gringoes.com/categoria.asp?ID_categoria=2 Avoid hithhiking. Always ask if it's safe to drink tap water. Buy a travel guide like Lonely Planet or Let's Go. Buy a digital camera and take lots of pictures !!! Boa sorte!

* the most important meal of the day in Brazil is lunch, and we never have pizza for lunch... * people will try to communicate with you even if they don't know how to speak in English, they love to learn about other cultures. * a lot of people will ask you about Bush, be prepared... * do not trow your toilet paper in the toilet, we always trow it in the garbage basket... it might seem weird to you now, but that how we do in Brazil... hehehe anyway, you are going to have a great time, I am sure! =)

Which language would be best to learn first in this situation?
Spanish or Portuguese? Here's the situation: We have a student who will work for an international company upon graduation from college. The initial placement could be in Brazil or Mexico, but eventually the student will be shifted to the other country two years into the future. So, in other words, the student will have to learn both languages at some point in the future, although the order is uncertain. The student doesn't have enough time to study Spanish and Portuguese simultaneously, so he/she has to make a choice. Which would be better to start with first? Assume the student has equal access to a decent amount of native speakers of either language outside of class. Personally, I would say Portuguese because apparently Portuguese speakers can understand more Spanish than the other way around.

I would say Portuguese. I know some Spanish, but I still have a hard time understanding Portuguese. So in my opinion, learn Portuguese First.
2 :
I would say Portuguese, it is a lot harder to understand than Spanish. The student will have a much better chance of picking up Spanish than Portuguese.
3 :
In my opinion, you it has that to learn the two, because you do not have as to understand Spaniard speaking Portuguese or vice she turns. exemple: Holla, que tál? Oi como você está? How are you? it is seeing as they are different. Bom seja o que for você vai ter muito problema com a gramática da lÃngua portuguesa se você for aprender, então boa sorte com sua escolha.

Can I use my STUDENT ID for employment?
I'm 16 and I only have my Student ID as a photo ID, will that be enough? I also have my SSN card, birthday certificate, school report card(?) I read online the I-9 this should be fine..but the manager told me she has to check with the general manager if it's okay. I'm really worried I won't be hired anymore because I only have a student ID!! Can anyone confirm this? I'm working for a restaurant chain Texas de Brazil

You can use your SSN card and birth certificate.
2 :
Just call them and ask. The Social Security card and birth certificate are two official documents, and they can use the school ID to match your name on the documents to your picture.
3 :
If you're talking about the I-9, then *YES* it is OK. You can see for yourself on the I-9 instructions that it says a school ID with photo is one of the acceptable forms of identification. Just because the manager didn't know how to read the instructions on the form doesn't mean that the general manager is also clueless. Hopefully, anyway.

I cant stop thinking about this girl who has a boyfriend?
Ok so there is this foreign exchange student from brazil who i dated for not very long. Things were going good until she decided she cant date anymore because she has a boyfriend back home. This really has me upset and it has been nearly a month and i still cant get over it no matter what. All i think about is her and here lucky boyfriend. I feel so jealous.

If she had a boyfriend back home, why was she dating you.
2 :
If she is a foreign exhange student, that means soon enough she will have to go back to Brazil, and that will end up becoming a long distance relationship, and usually those types of relationships are difficult and do not last. It doesn't really seem worth it. You can still be friends and hang out. She does have someone back home, and when she has to go back to Brazil, she will be going back to him, so its best to not get yourself involved with this girl, because you will end up hurt....

She does have someone back home, and when she has to go back to Brazil, she will be going back to him, so its best to not get yourself involved with this girl, because you will end up hurt....

hmmmmm.... well you said your jealous....... so just dont do anything stupid... but start talking to her more and just tell her ull always be there for her if her hurts her... but dont get too... far into that or shell think ur gay... hope it helped:))

An American going to college in Brazil?
An American going to college in Brazil?
I am currently living in Brazil as in exchange student for my junior year of high school, and when I return (July of 2010) I have to finish up high school. When I finish, I want to go to college in Brazil. I don't want to be with a different college and study abroad here, I want to live here and go to college. To do this here they need to take Enem, it's like the ACT/SAT there, but harder and in Portuguese. I am already quite good at Portuguese and will be almost fluent by the time I leave. How could I work this out? Will I have to take Enem too, or do they have a program for foreigners? I was thinking a college in the South. Sao Paulo, Santa Catarina, Parana, or maybe Minas Gerias. Just let me know what you know! Muita obrigada!

hello, girl! I'm Brazilian... In Brazil, the student begin to study in February and finish in December. They'll have holidays in July and January. Have you ready suscribed the Enem? Enem will begin the next week! If you ask about a program for froeigners, search for www.enem.inep.gov.br and enter in contact with them and get their informations. See you! Boa sorte!
2 :
BRAZIL IT`S GRATE!! IM BRAZILIAN. you shearc to MARINGÃ...
3 :
No, you can work and pay a private one. Enem to private colleges is just to reduce the money you pay every month or if you would like to go to a public one. You should try, it will be good to you even if you go to a private college that will reduce and you will save money. :-) I am Brazilian and college student if you have more questions plz e-mail me that I will be happy to help you if I can :-) Take care and good luck. Ah! Important! Before to join a private college you should get information if that college graduation is accepted around the world mainly in your country if you think about come back some day. miss_sunshine_ray@hotmail.com

I'm jealous! Wish I could have gone to college in Brazil.... Wish I could live there NOW!... I'm American too btw
5 :
Contact the school you want to attend and see what they say. Speak with them in portuguese so they know your serious.

What to expect in Brazil?
What to expect in Brazil?
I'm going to Florianopolis, Santa Catarina, Brazil in a couple days to be an exchange student. What should I expect, or what is something interesting about this area of Brazil?

Hum...Florianopolis is not a large city (400.000 habitants), it has a good quality of life, it's organized and people there are polite...But it's not an interesting city for who likes funny, history, good beaches, culture and Colonial constructions... The state of Santa Catarina is cool! In the other cities, there are many options of leisure and culture. German people colonized the interior of the state and there are many beautiful and historical constructions! Maybe you'll like the city because it's gonna be a new experience for you, this is gonna be a new thing...But I don't think that Florinaopolis is a good city to live during many time...
2 :
hi Florianopolis is beautiful city, many Brazilian love to visit Floripa. The main attraction here is the beaches or marine sports such as surfing, diving, windsurf and etc.. Or you can just visit there and have some beers. Summer goes until March or April, if you want to appreciate the summer activity, I recommend you starts get going right after you arrive to the city. You would enjoy the city much better if you drive the car, bcz the public transportation here is so terrible, but not that complicated, just need patience. The southern part of the island has many beautiful beaches w/ nature, the northern part is more developed, many celebrities used to like Jurere Internacional Beach. If you like some adventure, I recommend, you visit Campeche Island. Winter here is pretty boring, nothing to do, used to have a huge line in front of cinema on weekend. The cafes or coffee shop will be packed in the city. If you'd like to visit other city in Brazil, I suggest you do in June-August. Because the northern part of Brazil doesn't get that cold like in Floripa. Here, you don't need 100% wool coat but good jacket in winter time, gets down around 10℃. I am foreigner, living here for 10 yrs, love this city, hope you like also. Have a nice stay:)

What certifications should I have to work in a private equity investment fund? I'm a student of civil engineering at Brazil and I like the sand of finance, and would like to start my career in this world of business ... Is there a requirement for me to get these funds? Is there any way in the United States or certification I should do? Is there a university extension course, what a good school for me to learn? Thank you all.

At the very least you should have an MBA or finance degree. Then you should obtain a FINRA Series 6 or 7 registration. Once you begin working at a private equity fund, you should obtain one or more certifications, such as a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), Chartered Financial Professional (CFO), or Financial Compliance Professional (FCP). Check the www.finra.org website and the www.nasaa.org website for additional requirements.

i think Ghana is the the best place to be cos students who come to Ghana for their ecxhange programmes have an experience of a life time.
2 :
Russia!! :) Sorry to sound so damn enthusiastic, but it's so fashionable and classy aha. And Foreign. LOLL. That would be my first pick out of the list. I think France would look the best on your application, simply because French is the second most important language in the World. Especially Government jobs, such as United Nations etc. It's important to know :) My third pick is Spain :) The Shoe & Bag Shopping :) Aha, sorry if my answer is pretty girl-y :) But yesh, that's what comes to my mind with those countries. Fingers crossed you get to do the AFS Foreign Exchange Student Program!! -- Sisii
3 :
It will look great for college, although I do think you should wait a year. You list some interesting choices -- the organization will have you pick your top three. It kind of depends on what you are looking for out of the exchange. If you are going because you have a particular culture that interests you ... go in that direction. If you are looking at your ancestors, again, you have some guidance. If you are looking for a language that will help you in the future, consider Russia, Brazil or Egypt. All of those will have the need for competent linguists.
4 :
It will definatly look good on colledge! I would say france but you can go on there website and talk with some one who will help you woth your top three and you can request a free catalog with info (:
5 :
It will DEFINITELY look good in college!!! For a totally different lifetime experience.. i would suggest portugal, egypt, brazil and ghana because these countries are very different compared to US[ i'm assuming you're from US]. You would experience a totally different culture compared to what you might experience in some other European countries. I'm not saying that European countries and US are the same in culture or something but they are closer compared to the once i've listed above. i think it would be a great adventure to have a culture shock! a great story to tell my kids one day.. but then again, doing a study abroad at an early age is definitely worth bragging about!! Good luck!
6 :
You're not going to get a straight answer from anyone that doesn't have a little biased spin on it. I went to Japan, and it was great, but thinking back on it, I wish I went to someplace where people were less fanatical about it. If I could do it again, I'd have done Czech Republic or an Arab speaking country. Just so you know, AFS offers a scholarship if you let them choose for you. Not a bad way to defray costs.
7 :
Regardless of which country you choose check for accreditation, because Danish students can not get a year in an U.S High school accredited because the curriculum is so much more demanding in Denmark than in the US. There is no need to waste an entire year as I have seen several of my friends do. It is too late to be sorry about returning and being placed a whole year behind your peers when you have left for the destination. Research accreditation before you leave.

Visa to enter Brazil Question?
Visa to enter Brazil Question?
I'm a US Citizen. I've been to Brazil before just that this is the first time I have to issue the visa myself. I had a Visa on 2005 that say it is valid for 5 years, but I got a new passport. Applying for a new visa will bring problems because I still have a valid one? Can that visa be transfered to my new passport? Other thing. I;m going to take a short course in a Brazilian university...still I should apply for the tourist visa and not the student visa right?

Hello There My friend was in your same position recently and she was told by the Brazilian consulate and the Airlines a passenger may enter Brazil with a valid visa in an expired passport provided: - the page which contains the valid visa in the expired passport has not been invalidated or mutilated in a manner as to make the visa illegible. - the passenger holds also a valid passport of the same nationality. - a handwritten annotation does not appear in the passport that passenger has been advised to obtain a new visa in valid passport. IN ALL CASES, TRANSFER OF A VALID VISA TO A VALID PASSPORT IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. As far as getting a Student Visa or not..it truly depends what you will be doing..If you-re just going for a confence for a few days or a Language course that's under 90 days..then you-re tourist visa should be fine..But if you will be participating in any other form of educational activity a student visa will be required.I would suggest you apply ASAP for your Visa as a Student Visa sometimes takes a few weeks to process. Best of Luck!

How would you translate this into (Brazillian) Portugeuse?
How would you translate this into (Brazillian) Portugeuse?
What to expect in Brazil? I just found out that I have been accepted for a scholarship and will be an exchange student in Florianopolis, Brazil for 6 months. Can someone tell me, or give me an idea of what to expect? :P What is considered impolite, what are the people like, etc... and what is the school system like? Is it comparable to Canada, at all? I am very confused.

Ask ten people and you will get 10 different countries...... Do the research yourself and choose one or two that are close.... If you are a college student that shouldn't be too hard. Cheap is relative...it's how much you want to do and spend.
2 :
add to those countries you chose ,Egypt, Saudi, Dubi , Turkey, China it is really good thing to visit other countries and see the differences between you and others good luck in your travels ...

i highly recommend traveling to europe, even though south america is definitely cheaper. it's an easier cultural adjustment and virtually everyone speaks english. i loved germany, munich is one of my favorite cities. you should check out efcollegebreak.com they have ridiculously cheap summer tours for college students--and they travel basically all around the world. the tours are also great because it's so many destinations on one tour so you don't necessarily have to pick just one country. you can also use my EF College Break Campus Manager Code, TRILI9452 and get an extra $50 off any trip...it's pretty sweet.

Do you think a geography teacher should teach geography if she spells "Hungary" wrong?
Do you think a geography teacher should teach geography if she spells "Hungary" wrong?
There was a question on the board involving "Hungary", or according to her, "Hungry". Also, one day on the board there was a question about Brazil. However, a Brazilian student corrected her and said it is annoying when people spell it with a "z" and not as "Brasil" Who is correct?

Brasil is how people who live in Brazil spell their country. People in Spain spell their country España. What is correct is depends on the language you are speaking. Spelling is an important part of Geography, but it really isn't the most important part.
2 :
If you're in an English speaking country Brazil does have a z. In Portuguese and Spanish, it's Brasil. Hungary (the country) is the correct spelling not hungry (need for food).
3 :
I'm hoping that the geography teacher was just being careless when she spelled Hungary. If not, she may not be the best person to teach it, which actually happens more often than you think. I'm an education major and while I am no genius, I do believe you should prepare before you teach in order to avoid mistakes. As for Brazil/Brasil, I don't know. I always thought it was correct to spell it with a "z", but maybe that's how Americans spell it, while the people who are native to the country spell it another way.
