Is there anything necessarily wrong with multiculturalism?
Is there anything necessarily wrong with multiculturalism?
I can understand that young children should grow up with a good sense of patriotism instilled in them, but what is wrong with admiring others' cultures as well? If I were a Hispanic student and knew a lot about Brazil or Mexico, I wouldn't mind my teacher's taking a little time out one day of the year to allow me to discuss life in Brazil with my classmates. I haven't gone into detail about this issue, but I was wondering what other people think. Thanks!

Yes.

I really wish there were more cultured people in the U.S. Some people are so naive about the rest of the world they make me think of them as borderline retards.

I personally think that it would be really nice to share your life about Brazil, but it depends what the subject is in school. For example, if you are in a Spanish class and they are talking about different countries that would be a great idea.

You are going to get a lot of stupid answers for this question, mostly from racist and trolls and i am going to get thumbed down but look there is nothing wrong with it. Its actually a good thing mixing races is a beautiful thing and people should respect it

Nothing wrong with it, there has never been a society with no multiculturalism. The problems are in how do you manage it. If you treat them as you treat the existing population then the people don't like it, if you treat them as you think they require then the people don't like it. If you let them do what you like then the people don't like it. This is why politicians were not the correct people to implement it in modern time. You have to let the people do it themselves and give them a chance to work and adjust.

Acceptance and tolerance of the people around u is a good thing .keeping yourself while keeping an open mind is a wonderful and hard to come by trait .

No, there is nothing wrong with multiculturalism per se. Every society is diverse and ever changing. I think there are some valid complaints about educators overly romanticizing other cultures, but that comes with the territory. For instance, years ago I taught history in one of the most backward, reactionary areas in the US and my section on Islam was about as generous and open minded as possible. I spent a lot of time trying to calm students fears and I made a point of mentioning the accomplishments of early Islamic scholars in math and science. Today I believe I was simply being naive, but if I taught the same material again (I have taught in a about a decade) I would still lean towards being very generous towards Islam, because frankly all they have to do hear the other view is to turn on talk radio or Fox News. I would try to be honest, but not bigoted. Given the way I have been personally affected by the post 9-11 world that would be a challenge. The point is that it is extremely difficult to be multicultural without romanticizing the culture you are studying and it is hard to be critical of a cultural or religious group without being called a bigot. Someone will always be offended by the truth.

FYI: Brazilians are not Hispanic. We do not speak Spanish.
