YES!!! Who cares where!!! Just go, what an amazing opportunity. Okay, I got a little ahead of myself. I totally cannot impart any wisdom here- just wanted to say that this is awesome. Lucky you

Hi, I am from Rio, there is not much of a difference, just different places and accents. The people are very friendly and warm. Although I have never been to Florianópolis I did have the pleasure to visit Porto Alegre. It is trully a beautiful place. I am sure you will like it.... Rio is a much more agitaded city, the beaches are to die for. There is lots to do here. I am sure you will enjoy yourself plenty.

I think that the best place for you would be Florianópolis, simply because Florianópolis is a island enclosed for several other islands and the aquatic sports are very practiced for there. Here in Rio de Janeiro the city is Very populous the beaches are always full of swimmers. And to practice aquatic sports here would be necessary you to go far to seek beaches less frequented by swimmers. Male college student? You want Rio. All the cities are great but there is no city to be young in quite like Rio. The water is also significantly warmer too. You won't want to be kitesurfing in Floripa in July, but in Rio you can manage without a wetsuit all year round. If you do choose to study in Rio choose the federal university and not PUC. PUC is a joke. The professors are unprofessional and the students are the pampered elite of Rio who spend class chattering about their trip to NYC and how many Lacoste shirts they were able to get past customs. The federal university is more rigorous, but the students are friendlier and more serious.

I'm being sent to Brazil as an exchange student! Which region will I be sent to?
I know that I'm going to Brazil, but I haven't found out where in Brazil yet. I'm wondering where will I probably end up? I mean, I know I could end up anywhere, but are there regions of Brazil where they send a lot of students? I'm from the US (indiana) if that makes a difference, and I'll be there for a year. Thanks!!

I went to Mexico as an exchange student from the U.S. in 2006, for a year also. It was the best. Hope ya have fun.
2 :
It really depends upon where your exchange program operates. However, most Americans tend to go more to the bigger cities or to the south. Sao Paulo, Curitiba plus the smaller suburbs around them seem to be popular with placing organizations. The southern part of the country is richer than the north, so those are the families that can afford to host! Good luck and have fun!

I heard good things about Rio de Janiero. Start Learning Portuguese!
4 :
I could go to big cities as Sao Paulo, Sorocaba, Ribeirao Preto, Curitiba, Belo Horizonte. My advice is DON'T GO TO RIO DE JANEIRO!!!! This city is very dangerous. There is war between Police and trafficker, dengue and other Tropical Virus. If you choose Sao Paulo, please, contact me. I will be very happy in show the city. Good Travel!!!!

Is this a hate crime Brazil student expelled after wearing mini-dress?
Is this a hate crime Brazil student expelled after wearing mini-dress?
SAO PAULO – A Brazilian university expelled a woman who was heckled by hundreds of fellow students when she wore a short, pink dress to class, taking out newspaper ads Sunday to publicly accuse her of immorality. The private Bandeirante University in Sao Bernardo do Campo, outside Sao Paulo, said 20-year-old Geisy Arruda disrespected "ethical principles, academic dignity and morality." Arruda made headlines last month when she had to be escorted away by police after she tried to go to class wearing the mini-dress. She put on a professor's white coat and left amid a hail of insults and curses. Video of the Oct. 22 incident was posted on YouTube and picked up by Brazilian networks. Arruda has since appeared frequently on TV, saying she is struggling to return to normal life after being humiliated. Bandeirante University published advertisements accusing Arruda of attending class with "inadequate clothing" and having a provocative attitude that was "incompatible with the university environment." In the ad, titled "Educational Responsibility," the college said it had warned Arruda to change her behavior and decided to expel her after talking to students, staff and Arruda herself. It accused her of posing for pictures and provoking other students. Arruda told Folha Online on Sunday she was appalled. "I was the victim," she said. "How can I be expelled? It's absurd." Arruda said she learned of her expulsion through the news media and had not received official notification. She said university officials told her last week she would be allowed to return to classes with the protection of a security guard. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20091108/ap_on_re_la_am_ca/lt_brazil_short_dress

That is not a hate crime. If a girl wants to be treated like a lady, then dress and act like a lady. If you dress like a hooker/stripper, then expect condemnation to equal to appearance. That is not a hard concept to understand.
2 :
It appears the double standards are alive and well. What is going on here where students can judge her, curse her out, hail insults at her. From Latin American standards this is normal behavior and a case of profiling, discrimnation, but because it's in Latin American nobody has any problems with it.
3 :
it could be but, probably because brazilians are conservative catholics
4 :
How could that qualify as a "hate" crime??...Who HATES a nice mini-skirt??-certainly not ol` Starch` here..But if that university had dress codes she should have abided by those codes...hmmm..sounds like senhorita Aruda is a "fallen woman", send her over to me-I`ll break her fall.

I'm a marketing student and I want to do my internship (final year) in Brazil. Any tips?
In order to graduate I have to do an internship. I think it would be really cool to do that in Brazil. However I find it very hard to find companies, let alone contact any of them. The greatest barrier of course being the fact that I don't speak Portuguese. Is there anyone who can give me any tips or has worked/ done internships in Brazil?

Contact the American Embassy in Brasilia. In Sao Paulo they have just banned all billboards in the city,so advertising companies are not happy at the moment.
