Any tips on traveling in Brazil with an expired visa?

Any tips on traveling in Brazil with an expired visa?
I came here on an academic program with a student visa. The visa will expire with the ending of the program, but I would like to stay a bit longer and maybe travel a little. Does anyone have any experience of flying with an expired visa, or booking a longer bus trip? I know that it can't be easy, and I know it isn't very smart of me - but I would like to make the most of this situation! Thanks! [if it makes a difference: I'm an American citizen.]

The best tip is: don't do it. Seriously - you need to find out about getting an extension or getting a different type of visa. Being in a country illegally is not a good position to be in. It could be totally innocuous, and no one cares, or it could be total disaster, and there is no way to predict which way it will go.
