Help? Learning Portuguese in Brazil?
Help? Learning Portuguese in Brazil?
Hi, I am a Rotary exchange student in Brazil right now for the year. I have been here for 5 months and still feel my Portuguese sucks, even this Portuguese is supposed to be on of the easier languages! I can understand a lot when people speak to me, but for example during school and when when the teacher talks, brazilians talk to eachother, etc I can barely understand! They talk so fast and it's so hard at times, most kids say they are fluent by the end of their stay(well atleast conversationally) but i leave in 5 months! Tell me this will get better? I am starting to worry, i try and talk a lot, i study, etc but i dont know what im doing wrong. can anyone advise me?

Well I dont know who told you Portuguese is an easy language, but it sure is not. What you are going through is normal. When I went to the US, took me about 8 months to start speaking...I could understand but to speak was another story. And I found english a pretty easy language to learn. Just make sure you are surrounded by portuguese, and try to speak it with friends. It comes in time. And depending on the time you are here, i really dont think people can come out of here fluent so fast. Surely not in 5 months!
