What to expect in Brazil?

What to expect in Brazil?
I just found out that I have been accepted for a scholarship and will be an exchange student in Florianopolis, Brazil for 6 months. Can someone tell me, or give me an idea of what to expect? :P What is considered impolite, what are the people like, etc... and what is the school system like? Is it comparable to Canada, at all? I am very confused.

I have been to Brazil a few times, not to Florianopolis, but I do know people who have, so I will tell you what I can and I hope it helps. I have traveled to different parts of Brazil and I have always found the people very nice. Brazil does have a high crime rate though, so when you go places try to go in a group and definitely go in a group at night. I wouldn't go anywhere by yourself until you get a feel for the place. Do not make the "ok" sign (thumb and pointer finger making a circle and three other fingers spread out) it is consider a very vulgar hand signal (like the middle finger). Also do not put your purse on the floor. That is something prostitutes do. Florianopolis is a surfing town. They have very nice beaches, so I am sure you will have a nice time. There is also a lot of German influence in Brazil. Many Germans immigrated to Brazil. I believe there is a neat German town somewhere near there. I hope that helps! That is some of the advice I was given before I traveled there. It is a wonderful country.

Great! Você será sempre bem vinda! I'm from Curitiba Nós do Brasil somos conhecidos pela simpatia e alegria. Alguns assuntos importantes: 1. Traga roupas para frio e roupas de calor, o tempo aqui é bem instável. 2. Realmente não faça o sinal de OK 3. Santa Catarina é muito segura. 4. As pessoas são muito simpáticas 5. Você fará muitos amigos 6. Há muitos pontos turísticos. 7. A nossa cultura alimentar é um pouco diferente. See this link to compare the school system: http://www.sk.com.br/sk-edsys.html If you have any question you can ask me: tfpsdc@yahoo.com.br Sorry for the spelling mistakes, i'm learning english

Any tips on traveling in Brazil with an expired visa?

Any tips on traveling in Brazil with an expired visa?
I came here on an academic program with a student visa. The visa will expire with the ending of the program, but I would like to stay a bit longer and maybe travel a little. Does anyone have any experience of flying with an expired visa, or booking a longer bus trip? I know that it can't be easy, and I know it isn't very smart of me - but I would like to make the most of this situation! Thanks! [if it makes a difference: I'm an American citizen.]

The best tip is: don't do it. Seriously - you need to find out about getting an extension or getting a different type of visa. Being in a country illegally is not a good position to be in. It could be totally innocuous, and no one cares, or it could be total disaster, and there is no way to predict which way it will go.

In February there is in Brazil the carnival, in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. a brazilian

There's the so called 'Sao Paulo Fashion Week' (SPFW), a relatively huge event, the 5th fashion week in the world in number of designers (behind NY, Milan, Paris and London). The event occurs twice in the year: 3rd week of January and 3rd week of June. About carnival: its last day, a Wednesday, is counted 40 days backwards Easter Friday.

There are some events mostly in São Paulo and Rio... but mostly in São Paulo. In January there is the São Paulo Fashion Week (winter, the summer edition starts in July), that happens at the Bienal do Ibirapuera, normally is in the last week of the month. It has runway shows of, the biggest players in the fashion industry. In February, there is the São Paulo and Rio Carnival. If u look for a more fashion side of carnival, stick with these two states, while others states only have music as mainly atraction (Salvador as an example, where people use "Abadas" to follow the Trio Eletrico. The Abadas is nothing more that t-shirts customized and overpriced). It happens at the end of february in 2009 i think that in the last week of the month, and is a BIG party. It's a party of 5 days. You can get more info at the sites listed in sources, as the date approaches. There are also other minor events, that happens (mainly) in São Paulo, that you can check at the aconteca eventos site. It's listed in the sources, but you have to check more close to january 2009. If u come to São Paulo, you have to check the MASP (Museum of Art of São Paulo), the Pinacoteca do Estado, and the Museu da Língua Portuguesa Estação da Luz. But remember, always check the dates of the events, to have sure. How much time will u stay here? Maybe you could visit Minas Gerais, that also has beautiful places. Hope that helps!

Where would you want to visit as a guest student in the US?

Where would you want to visit as a guest student in the US?
Hi. My husband and I live in the southeast US and will be hosting a high schooler from Brazil next year. We always vacation for the week over Christmas and will take her with us next year. But we can't decide where to go. She enjoys everything and has no dislikes. We want it to be nice and fun for her to have a family vacation. So, high school kids, help me out please! Where would you want to go? Thanks:)

Disney Land or Disney World.. because i've never been there.. I'm 14..

My two favorite places to visit are Washington (state) and North Carolina. In Washington, the mountains are great, and they have the beach as well.. even though it water is freezing. NC there is soo much to do. beach, surfing, snorkling, jet skiis, fishing, the most beautiful sunset. I stay at Wrightsville Beach, but if you go further from the coast, Asheville is gorgerous. I hope i helped (:

I would love to go to the beach. Maybe Florida and then disney word? Or some big city in California... like LA? then you get to go to the beach and have tons of fun.

I'm fourteen, and I enjoy everything too, not to mention I will be a foreign exchange student next year! Here are some suggestions: California (Disney Land), Hawaii, Idaho (Silverwood Theme Park), Las Vegas, New York. We also have lots of things to do here in Washington state! Beaches, camping, you name it! I'm sure anything that you decide will be fine as long as your guest feels comfortable. Good luck!

I've hosted 13 exchange students, and am looking forward to number 14 in the fall. One thing I've found out -- they are unpredictable! For example ... the kid we have this year asked to go to Mt. Rushmore and the Badlands. Go figure! Also, when taking your trip, remember that your exchange organization probably offers trips to different places. Those are usually the East Coast, California and Hawaii. If your student plans to take one of those, you probably wouldn't want to take the same trip! One thing we've discovered that most Brazilians have not seen snow! Depending on where you live in the southeast, you may not have much there either. So, a winter ski trip might be something worth considering. However, I'd wait until your student has been with you a while, and feels comfortable enough to express an opinion. She may feel like she has to agree with what you want to do to be polite and not want to express an opinion. What I've done in the past, once I've gotten to know my kids a bit, is put together three or four very different ideas -- usually they'll go for one (but not this year! LOL). So, I'd suggest looking at the great ideas these kids have given you, flesh them out somewhat and present all three. Make sure she knows about the other trips her exchange organization might offer as well. Good luck and have a great year! P.S. If you have not hosted before, I'd like to let you know it's perfectly acceptable for you to ask her to pay for big ticket vacation items like ski lift tickets, plane tickets, etc.
