I know I just posted this this afternoon, but I accidentally closed it for answers! =( I still need more advice! Any more answers than the first two? HERE'S THE ORIGINAL DETAILS: Well, just actually turned 18 a week ago.. I'm also still a student here in the Philippines and don't earn my own money. :( I've been wanting to go to Brazil since I was 15.. Now I think I'm ready than ever, at least, as myself. The problem is what actually is the first step in achieving this dream trip? Help please... I really haven't travelled before. Do u guys think I could actually compensate for this trip? But I seriously want to, and I'm ready to do anything. So please, any suggestions or proven ways that u know for my trip to be made possible, I'D BE MORE THAN THANKFUL. Please no trash posts. Muito obrigada! hey Abby! I already have a passport. (^.^).. Uhm,, what's next??.. Derek! Sou garota, sim.. hehehe Well the plane ticket cost is what I'm most worried about.. I mean, I should find ways to earn that amount of money.. huhu.. but besides that, would another thing cost that much or even more?? I have a number of friends there with whom I have constant communication online. But I'd love to be in contact with u too! Have u ever been to Brazil? Again, muito obrigadA.. Hi, travel is a worthwhile ambition at any age...you're in good company. My initial reaction when I saw the listing was that there was one possible problem you may face, though having read the rest of your question I suspect I needn't have worried. The language (Portuguese) is not widely spoken outside of Portugal and, of course, Brazil. You do seem to be familiar with the language, so I'm assuming that won't be a problem for you. The only other worry I would have is that you are young (18) and, I think, female...This is not a good combination for travelling alone in any country. If you are female I would suggest you find a suitable travelling companion (male or female) who you are comfortable with and who can offer at least a basic form of protection against those men who may prey on apparently defenseless young girls. Other than that I can tell you from personal experience that Brazil is a warm and friendly country, with masses of places to see, things to do and people to meet. They have an exhuberance for life that is incomparable. To be able to experience that is definitely worth the trip. The Rio de Janiero Mardi Gras is certainly a highlight, but is also the event that has the highest incidence of crime. Violent attacks for sex or money are common, so if you go ensure you are in company. Other than that enjoy yout trip...you'll remember it all your life. Cheers, BobSpain

RIO DE JANEIRO (City) Rio is a very pretty and big city. One of the biggest, most largest, famous and beatiful in the world, of course. But, Rio has not only the beaches and mountains to see. There are many other very nice sights. FAMOUS PLACES: The most famous are the Christ on Corcovado and the Pão-de-açúcar (Sugar Loaf). Don't let to see the Tijuca National Park, where we have the largest urban forrest all of the world. QUINTA DA BOA-VISTA: See, also, the "QUINTA DA BOA-VISTA", a very large place used by our emperors in the XIX century. The sight is very pretty, with a lake, trees, palms, rocks, and a palace. There's a very nice museum of natural history inside the palace. At side, you find the Rio's zoo. SOUTH ZONE: You can't let to see, also, "Pedra Bonita". Guys flies in hang glides from there. A tandem flight in a hang gliding cost about US$ 140.00. Another option is a flight by paraglider. Look for "Lagoa" (lagoon), where the highest Christmas tree is mounted, every year, in december. Pedra Bonita and Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas are inside the South zone. Near Ipanema and Copacabana. WEST ZONE: You must to shop in Barrashopping and New York City shopping centers. In Bangu, you find the "Pedra Branca", a big mountain. CENTER: Coming back to the Center, search for "Arcos da Lapa". Very nice. Ask for informatiosn about the BONDINHO DE SANTA TERESA, a rail train like that of San Francisco. Know the city using the subway. I suggest to see "Estação Carioca" (Carioca station). You can acess the main avenue - avenida Rio Branco - a finacial center and the Cinelândia, a place with some cinemas. In Cinelandia, we have the city Theatre (Teatro Municipal). You can see the national library in front Cinelandia. Also, in Cinelandia, you find the PASSEIO PÚBLICO, a public garden. RIO DE JANEIRO (State): If you spend a little bit more time, you can to visit Petrópolis. About 1 hour or less from Rio, by bus. You must see there a big organ and a famous hotel called "QUITANDINHA"). Teresópolis, another town is very beautiful. Petrópolis and Teresópolis are twin towns, because it was build for our King Pedro II and the Queen Teresa. In Teresópolis, you see a mountain called "Dedo de Deus" (that means, God's finger) from the main avenue. From a small tower, you have a sight of the "Granja Comari", a beautiful ranch used by the national brazilian football (soccer) team. Nova Friburgo (a german town); Penedo (a town founded by immigants from Finland. Very nice!) Itatiaia and Resende, where you can find the "Pico das Agulhas Negras" and the Brazilian Army's academy (AMAN); Cabo Frio, Araruama and Búzios, all with very good beaches. Paraty with an architeture of XVIII century have a international festival of literature - FLIP. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- OTHER STATES STATE OF RIO GRANDE DO SULl: If you want something coldest, you can goes to the "Serras Gaúchas", very nice european look places. Rio Grande do Sul, on argentinian border, have descendants of germans, italians, portuguese and russians. The most beautiful girls and the most famous brazilian top models (Gisele Bündchen, Anna Hickmann, Shirley Malmann) are from Rio Grande do Sul. You must to visit "Serras Gaúchas" (mountains). A very, very beautiful place to go. The best towns are Canela e Gramado best known by it festivals of cinema, advertsing and chocolate. There,are, also, a tonw in miniature. Good for pictures. STATE OF SANTA CATARINA: A very beautiful state sttled by descendants fo germans, portuguese and italians. As in Rio Grande do Sul, a big part of the population is blond with blue eyes. I recommend to visit Blumenau, Pomerode (german towns) and Balneário Camboriú, with wonderful beaches. Pomerode is best known for extreme sports. The Oktoberfest is in Blumenau, in october, of course. The capital is Florianópolis (best known as "Floripa") a very beautiful island-city best known for the bridge and it many beaches and girls. Nice place for surfing. STATE OF PARANÁ: A must-see place is Foz do Iguaçú, with the greatest falls ("Cataratas do Iguaçú") in the world. Theres is the world's biggest hidrelectric central there. I recommend you Curitiba, the capital. Curitiba have a great presence of german, italian, polish and ukranian descendants. Visit the "Portal Polonês", Palácio de Cristal, Castelo Lupion, Ópera de Arame, Jardim Botânico Fanchette Rischbieter (Bottanic Garden), Rua 24 Horas (24 hours street), Rua das Flores (Flowers street), and Museu Oscar Niemeyer among many others. Londrina is another nice city to go. As in Rio Grande do Sul and Paraná, european descendants make a "blond" paisage.
